rather bad HD problem

Hey guys,I only said it was bad as well..it has over 300 gigs of music(mostly made by my friend)...and the majority of them are his Masters...I tried his hard drive on his computer and mine..no luck..It doesn't seem to be getting any power at all..No spinning, no nothing..not even seen in the Bios..to me it sounds like a power issue thats on board the hard drive..I noticed the PCB board kind of looks like it can possibly be replaced..I'm doubtful of that but ya never know in this age of technology..I enclosed a picture in case to show what I was referring to..Would it be worth trying to replace(IF its even possible) or should I just tell him to spend a crap load on sending it in to get recovered?

actually, if you buy the same drive you can replace the circuit board

does it have to be the same storage space? i i know they're inexpensive but I know my friend's a cheap sh*t lo(nice friend i am i know, but I've known him 20+ years lol).

It needs to be the same board, and the best way to guarantee that is to buy the same drive...

Tell your friend; He can either buy a replacement drive, or he can spend lots of money on professional recovery.

You should use a multimeter to check if the power is getting to the drive motor first.

If it is, then the motor inside is dead and replacing the pcb might not help

I'm not sure which trace is used for power, but if you probe the data / signal trace by mistake the worst thing that can happen is you kill the pcb, which you're replacing anyway

well..he's had it for a bit of time so as far as getting the same drive..im not sure it looks good on that one..I think I'm just gonna give him the choice of either tryin to fix it ourselves(well..me) or send it in to be fixed..if it was me Id try to fix it since im broke but, its not my drive..wouldn't have been bad to use my digimeter for something other than my car tho lol..Thanks for the suggestions guys(more is always welcome of course)..I really appreciate it..

I also forgot to mention(just remembered) that this was an external drive at one point in time..it was a WD MyBook ..but took it out to see what was wrong with it..didn't know if that would be any help on what might be wrong(in case someone is still thinkin of this issue)
