New RAID Setup - 2X1TB Samsung F1's (Benchmarks Included)

Post by Major_A »

I know that SSDs are all the rage right now. However, for the price/storage ratio I didn't even consider them so I bought 2 Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB drives. I hooked them to my motherboard's onboard Intel ICH10R controller in RAID 0 with a 128K cluster size. For comparison sake I've attached results from my 750GB Samsung Spinpoint F1 drive and another RAID 0 setup from my surfing PC.

Honestly I can't tell a difference in the real world day to day usage. Then again I've only had the setup for a few days now and I haven't even finished reinstalling my core applications.

Very nice storage for 2 terabytes. Might want to consider putting them in RAID 1 though if you put any important data on them. Otherwise if you are just using them for an OS, you could always short-stroke them with a ~200GB partition. I used to short-stroke my 300GB 7200.10 drives when benching with 4 drives and a 30GB partition. Make for some crazy fast hard-drives at 7200RPM :)

Thank you. I'm not too terribly worried about data corruption or losing a disk. The only real important files on those drives are my pictures and I have them backed up in several locations. If I backup data I try to put it in 3 different places. Never know when those Gremlins are coming.
