HD setup

Post by Venge »

Hi all

New to the forums but youve all been really helpful with my questions so far.

Im getting a 74gb WD raptor soon and i had intended to use it mainly for games.

I also have a 80gb ide hd and a 100 gb external which i use for music and video storage.

I was wonderng what the best way to set up the drives is

I was thinking of having the raptor for games and then putting xp pro on the ide drive on its own really.

So any advice would be cool

Thanks

best configuration is gonna be to have xp pro and the games on the Raptor, that will give you the best OS boot and game boot times

if windows is pre sp2 then yes you need it. If you windows disk has sp2 integrated then no you don't. Other wise yes you need the sata controller drivers to do the install

If you need the SATA drivers to install, Just copy them to a floppy

When installing windoze, press F6 "install SCSI or other 3rd party drivers"
Insert your floppy.
Then just select your driver and your done!

Well i have xp pro lite (pre sp2) and xp pro normal sp2

I think i will just install the normal version as i dont have a floppy drive coz i wasnt bothered getting one when i built the pc coz i dont have much need for one

ohh and this is what a friend told me

"if you haven't already, set windows to use a static size for virtual memory (most do RAM * 2). if you don't, filling up your drive causes windows to shrink your swap space causing slow downs and potentially errors when it runs out of swap space.

anyway, its a good idea to have your swap space on a sata drive and having windows"

How can i do this ?

Thanks
