Crap, and things were going so well for Seagate too. I could just look for those little green semi-circles and I'd know I would be getting a quality product. Now I'm probably gonna have to check the serial number label to see if it's really from Seagate or if it was from Maxtor, if they're even going to differentiate them that is.

I have to say im not crazy about this... I really like Seagate and I really like Maxtor. But more than anything i like competition. With western digital, Maxtor, Seagate, and Hitachi i have lots of options, now i have fewer.... overall i find that a bad thing as a consumer.

PWNT, I always read the forum jumpbox when I sign up, so I see stuff likethat. I have to agree, the reduced competition has me a little scared. I don't want two choices for processors, two for GFX, and two for HDD....that would suck. Watch prices fly up. Quality doesn't necessarily go down (nV vs. ATI, but both company's cards do fairly well, nV is ahead right now) but prices sure go up!Kerii wrote:Wait... you mean to tell me LR has a news section?

I have two Maxtor Diamond Fireball 7200 60GB in Raid0 and they run without a problem! The pc is now 6 years old, and its been on for at least half that time... (i leave it on day and night most weeks).
Pretty happy with them, but I guess they were the top range maxtor drives back then.
I hate when these kind of mergers occur... less options and competition Anyone remember Quantum? :D
I've been out of the PC circle for a bit now, what HDD options do we have these days? Seagate, WD?

yeah too many horror stories about them just goin to crap. I have not willingly used a maxtor or even a Western Digital. I used to use IBM drives untill they were bought by Hitachi. Since then it has been segate all the way...chakhay2000 wrote:Great! Just the thing we needed to add to our HDD woes! I had made it a rule to steer clear of Maxtor but now maxtor inventory will probably be rebadged as Seagate! ARRGGHH!!!!!!

Well, I'm batting 1 dead Maxtor and two dead Seagates since 1993. The most recent was a Seagate 1.2Gb drive a few months back.
Of course I don't blame Seagate nor Maxtor for the drive failures at all. They were well beyond warranty and were pulled out from a few well used computers.
I got a 10Gb Maxtor now that is running just fine. It's an older drive, but it's working well. I've run software to test the drive and to check for symptoms if the drive was showing any problems. So far it looks very dependable.
Dice, I had a WD 40Gb model die on me two years ago with about three months after the warranty expired. Was I really bummed. The drive gave no sign of abrupt failure that had happened. Then, after reading some forums, I found out that WD had a few levels of HDD's. Just stay away from the 1-yr warranty WD's. They are throw always and low ended system builders use them. So, I did replace that WD 40Gb with a WD 80Gb with a three warranty. It's humming along very well too.

Im sure that the market competition has forced these guys to make the product a bit more dependable. There are only so many people that live under a rock and dont read reviews/forums that buy just because they heard someone say the name a while back. I just have stayed away from them because i have done data recovery and it is a LONG PROCESS
