I have been looking and i cant find anything...

Does anyone know of a barebone (no drive) sata2 with a GB network adapter NAS kit that will support at least a 750gb drive?

I'll dig threw my stuff, I went shopping for NAS boxes for work awhile back. Its cheaper to build one out of a mATX and run freeNAS.

Well Nothing I have will beat that price, not for a single drive set up... Cheapest I have in my list o stuff was a Buffalo Linstation and it was ~650, but it has a drive with it.

Most home use wont pound a NAS that hard, most of us here have enough parts laying around to build a simple NAS.

Why not use Linux instead, the box can do way more than just NAS.

I used this guide a while ago and it's still working for me!
My next step is to setup dynDNS to access the files etc. from anywhere (stream vids @ work )

be nice if there was an auto-installing one taht we didnt need a monitor for. pop the dvd or cd in, it installs, and auto shares everything on all hard drives it finds...things like that

getting off topic - but Dragon, I think these guys have the best idea - build your own with hardware laying around. Linux I imagine will be ALOT more stable over a longer period of time, as long as I could set up realvnc or something similiar to monitor it, it should do fine

Well see i am //WAS running freenas, but i dont know if its my hardware or the new build of it, but it keeps crashing when i upload and then looses all of its configs. I have reinstalled the program i dont know how many times and still does it. So i am working on getting an CENTOS box up for my NAS.

I am done using windows for my servers. Linux FTW!!!!

The only reason i posted here was for another option and possibly jump on it.

I use a buffalo terastation pro 1TB NAS here at work, every now and then the goes stupid and forgets the user list. Then I spend ~2 hours typing them all back in. That sucks A LOT!

I'm starting to play with the freeNAS to act as storage for an HTPC; if I dont like that I may just build it all in to one machine and use the HTPC as a storage server..

how low on system specs can you go to run a NAS? I've got some older machine sitting around gathering dust since the move that I wanna set back up and give some task for the remainder of their natural lives.

Not sure how old you can go, I'm going to set it up on a AMD 1.3 Tbird. FreeNAS only needs 32mb of space (installed) and 128mb ram to work, the rest is hardware (mobo) limits for drive space and your NIC speed. so if you have an old 486dx2 laying around I wouldn't try it, I'd say 500mhz or better and a mobo that can handle large drives if you need them.

You will be suprised how low it can get with specs. Like a 300mhz and 64mb of ram i believe you will be ok. any lower might start to get concerned. LOL

I've got a 500mhz Celery with 256mb ram. it's not much, and if it dies in a month, I wouldn't be surprised, but I'd like to see it doing something other than sitting in a corner as door stop.

I've got a 500mhz Celery with 256mb ram. it's not much, and if it dies in a month, I wouldn't be surprised, but I'd like to see it doing something other than sitting in a corner as door stop.

Actually, I forgot I have a AMD Duron 700mhz. That should do ok for a storage server. might have to fire it up and see what the actual specs are and dig up enough ram to max it out.
