320 gig 16MB cache 7200RPM HDD $110

Post by vicaphit »

I just visited my local wal mart for granola bars, and ventured through the tiny computer hardware section to find that they are selling a 320 gig 16MBcache 7200RPM drive for $110... I cant remember which company made the HDD, but I know it was a major brand.

Anyone want to give me some advice. Maybe if it is a certain brand I should not buy.

Theres Seagate and Western Digital basically.

But 110$ isn't an amazing deal, they sell for less than 100$ online.

Maxtor is no more, they we're bought by Seagate.

BSODs usually have nothing to do with the HDD though, and you shouldn't get much, if any, on a stock computer. Almost only happens when your overclock isn't 100% stable.

ah, overclocks...thats why. This computer I am running now is overclocked just a bit, so I guess it is more likely to BSOD since it is overclocked.

Not if your overclock is tested and stable, if it can runn ORTHOS for 5+ hours then it's pretty much rock solid.

WD, Seagate, Samsung, Maxtor, ...all good companies in my opinion. I personally only buy WD because they are usually the cheapest. You can easily get a 500gb HD for only 100 bucks nowadays online.

Seagate is actually rocking a 32mb cache nowadays. I think the 500GB with perp tech and 32mb cache was $120 the other night when i looked. (come on tax refund!!).

If you shop via the local stores, Wal*Mart or Office Max tend to have good sales of 500Mb drives for a little as $89 with mail-in rebates. However, I'm not a mail-in rebate person since I've been burned twice on not getting companies to pay up on them.

NewEgg and a few other on-line stores have good deals with very low cost shipping on drives too. Always shop around first.
