this board: ASUS P5N-E SLI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard

"SATA 3Gb/s:
4 x Internal SATA 3.0 Gb/s
1 x External SATA 3.0 Gb/s"

this harddrive:
Western Digital Raptor X WD1500AHFD 150GB

mobo has SATA vs. the Raptor having Serial ATA150

Far as I know (and some one double check me) you can put a sata150 drive on a 3gbs connection but not the other way around.

I worked with the WD Raptor on all kinds of SATA2 boards no problem there.

Did some more looking last night. It looks like you can use the sata150 (sata I) drive on a sata3.0 (sata II) connection. This is due to the fact that sata was designed to be backward and forward compatible; but when you put a sata II drive on a sata I port but you have to have a jumper setting on the device set so it knows how to talk to board.

Exactly - sataI will work on sata2 with nothign done, sata2 will work on sata1 with a change of the jumpers on the drive. I dont think they have an auto sensing one yet.

Mike

I like sata for the nice small cable.

I never noticed a speed increase over ide.

I do NOT like sata when it uses cables without clips at the end to hold it in. I have had cables fall off already :(

No need. The WD Raptor series HD's are still SATA 1 (SATA 150), unless you will be using an SATA II HD.
