WD My Book Errors

Ok I have a WD My Book 500GB external Drive. This thing would not register via usb on one of my workstations. it registers fine on my other one but when I go to copy files it gives me this error message
What does this mean the drive is basically empty.
I have been able to load 2 folders containing images for 2 games on it so I know I can copy to the drive. I initially thought that maybe it had something to do with the image size or format but one of the files I copied is 3GB and the other is 5GB and I have a smaller 4GB one that I can't copy. Additionally I've copied an iso and a mdf.
Help please,
thanx

Try right clicking and properties on it so that it will tell you how much free space is left.
Even better, run
windirstat, point it to the drive and let it show you where any space might be eaten up. Press F6 while its open to show free space so your picture is accurate with what is on it.

I Believe it is something to do the FAT32 file system used on the WD My Books. I have a 250gb version and i could not copy a large file over either. Checking up on the internet about FAT32 i found that it is impossible to copy files over the size of 4gb, as the maximum supported size is..... 4GB!! Ofcourse you will be able to copy folders over of any size as they are usually made up of smaller files. I was able to copy over my music folder which was in excess of 40GB but wasnt able to copy a .iso file of only 5GB, I recieved the same error message and was totally confused as i had over 100GB free. I hope I am mostly correct, but as i say i found out most of this by searching on the internet.
Hope it answers you're question.

so does that mean that i should reformat the drive with nTfs? would that solve the problem?

Well if FAT32 is the problem then yeah it would fix it.

Ok so now another issue rears it's ugly head.
I have 2 of these externals, now I can't get either one to be recognized by windows when i plug them into my usb port i can hear the chime that I ussually hear when a usb device is plugged in but then like 5 seconds later I hear the chime that I ussually hear when I unplug a usb device. It's not the port cause i've tried all 10 ports on my system and the one i usually use for these drive reads my Flash drive, cell phone, MP3 Player, and PSP just fine.

I don't know what it could be I've been troubleshooting this for 2 hours now and nothing. The samething happend yesterday but when I tried it agian it just worked.
Thanx

Any luck with your hard drives? Just a thought but have you tried a different usb cable? Could be a duff one, n id always try the cheapest/weakest link first seeing as your other usb devices work.
And off topic, im new to all this, how do i make a nice signature like you have BiGg RiE?

Well here is a basic post about how to edit your sig:

If you are any good with GIMP or photoshop then you can make your own pictures, or feel free to edit one of the templates and add your specs onto the sig if you aren't.

Well I plugged my HDD in this morning and the led on the front is doing a kind of circular dance, which is what it does when I plug it in ussually it takes a couple of seconds but this has been going on for about 5 minutes. I'll leave it for a while and see what happens I do have about 160GB of data on it, maybe the NTFS formating has something to do with it.
We'll see, if that doesn't work then I'll switch the usb cable.
