Hey,

My current back up harddrive is starting to fail (intermittently stop working). So, i need to get a new one. Currently i have 2 SATA HD's. one as primary with OS and programs and the other with stuff (pictures, music, random crap that i probably will never use but keep it anyways).

Also, i plan on building a new comp in the semi near future (within 6 months).

So, what reccomendations you guys have? Capacity looking about ~300gb give or take. right now i have 150, but that is kinda small.

SATA 150, SATA 3.0 g/b (would i even be able to run that??), seagate? western digital? some other brand? speed?

3.0gb is compatible with the older sata 1 specs, so yes you could run it if you do not have a sata2 motherboard. There is a jumper you have to set for 1.5gb operation.

I have used Western Digital for a LONG time and just recently bought 2 500gb Seagate because of the nice warranty. Never had problems with either.

I've used Hitachi's exclusively for almost 5 years now. I would highly recommend them.

In the past I've used Western Digital and Seagate drives without incident. I currently use a Western Digital Caviar SATA 3.0 g/b 320GB and so far has been flawless.

Just choose the drive you want based on price and reputation.

Western Digital. I used them exclusively for about 5 years, but they started to randomly fail on me. Switched to Seagate.

Seagate. Got 1 that was DOA (**** happens) and one that failed in the last 2 years.

Either way, i would say the failure rate is within reason. Just remember, regardless of the drive you select, back up your data regularly in case of catastrophic failure.

Yep!

Get a good DVD unit to backup with and a good brand of DVD media too!

When you do the backups, make sure it's readable in another computer's DVD without using special software to read the data on it.

well, my backing up is turning out to be a real pain in the ass. the drive works then cuts out and i have to restart to get the drive back - but sometimes that doesnt even work.

I did pick up a new drive though

I think it will work out fine for my needs.

Nice capcity of 320Gb for the ~$80 price. Three years ago our 40Gb died suddenly. For about $60 I replaced it with a 80Gb drive.

You did very well. :supz:
