Externel Enclosure that is powered off USB

Post by dicecca112 »

I like the Western Digital Passports, I don't like the idea that if the enclosure dies I have a non-working enclosure or not being able to upgrade the HDD. Look for 2.5 size, IDE or SATA, doesn't matter.

Anyone know of any? I want to just be able to through the enclosure in my laptop bag with the cord and go.

I got this from Newegg. Works great so far. Got it when I replaced my old 30GB IDE laptop HDD. No problems with not enough USB power with the laptops I've used it with (Dell Inspiron 1000, B120, E1405, Toshiba Satellite U30?-S5077). Although I think that might depend more on the hard drive than on the enclosure. Most of the 2.5" enclosures you'll find will work off of a USB port. Just keep in mind that some front USB ports and most USB-powered hubs don't deliver enough juice to power a 2.5" HDD.

I uses a couple 160gb Samsung HM160JU's for work stuff, love them. Self powered via the USB port, and on the inside its very simple.

got it yesterday, I believe the drive was DOA. I'm hoping it wasn't the Enclosure. I threw the HDD in my laptop, and it wouldn't recognize the HDD, now shouldn't it recognize it, even if it wasn't formatted.

When I put it in the enclosure, it would just click. My laptop HDD In it, was recognized on Windows though

HDD should show up in the BIOS, at least. Burn a copy of the GParted LiveCD. Easiest and most flexible way to format HDDs without having to install an OS. The ISO's pretty small, too. I've got a PATA/SATA to USB converter so I can test HDDs prior to installing them inside a case/enclosure.

Yup it was the drive apparently Hitachi uses 5W to Western Digitals 2.5W. So the drive wasn't getting enough power. Formatting now.
