Raid unmount and remount

Hello,
I'm not all that familiar with raid. Of course I will back up any data before I try the following scenario.

I have a friend with Win XP Pro SP 2, Dell Dimension 9100. The pc came with raid set up as default. Not sure if it's raid 0 or 1 but I will check that later.

I would like to know if I can safely "physically" remove the 2 hard drives in the pc and install 1 known good hard drive in the pc with win xp already installed on it
"change the bios to not run raid" and boot off the known good hard drive.

I then want to put back the original 2 hard drives and change the bios back to use raid so that we are back to the way things were originally.

Can this be done without loosing data or will the raid either raid 0 or raid 1 get corrupted?

Thanks :)

Removing the hard drives shouldn't be a problem. The array is stored on the Hard Drives so technically that array is portable to any other system with the same chipset. I'm not sure if it's necessary, but make sure the hard drives are placed back into the system in their original order.

Thanks,
I would think drive zero should be placed back in the drive sero sata port and drive 1 in sata 1.

if its raid one, it will work. if its raid 0, it will not

So are you saying, one can never remove a raid 0 and then bring it back?

He might be referring to the order in which the drives should be installed back. But don't worry, as long as you don't delete the array, your data is safe.

What you suggest in the original post will work fine (for all raid types).

As has been said before just make sure you plug the drives back in the order they are now.
