I am giving my girlfriends brother a external hard drive loaded with mp3's for christmas. Its a 320Gb drive. My question is if it is only going to be used for storing mp3's(wont be written to) does it matter if it gets filled to say 99% capacity?

Well as long as you make sure it's as defragged as you can get it before you fill it that full (defrag at 80%), then it should be alright to be full like that.
