Dropbox

Post by DMB2000uk »

I'm surprised there wasn't already a thread about this, so I thought I'd share the awesomeness that is dropbox with the good people at LR that might not have heard of it yet.

https://www.dropbox.com/

There you go :P

Seriously though, the vid on their site explains a great use for it, and with 2GB of free space (expandable to 3GB6GB with sign-up referrals (250MB extra per sign up for both people)), it's a great place to keep files in sync between different computers/people.

There's plenty of creative uses for it too if you like the idea but can't quite think of what to use it for.

XDrive bit the dust early this year and I had not found a replacement. I do like the extra space as well.

Is this thing full of advertisers or will the spam mail you their partner's goods and wares? That's one thing I hate.

Nope, completely ad free. :)

It's just a little system tray client that runs and keeps all your dropbox folder sync'd.

They are still running due to paid subscribers (like me), I figure skier can take this referral as he probably needs the space more than I do, so PM him if you want to give it a try :P

Yeah, I have that too :-P

It looks really handy so I keep it around just in case; but the only use I've had with it was showing people pictures I have on my dropbox, and as I don't have many pics on there it's not been used very much! I should probably look into uploading my iPhone pics to it more often.

Sounds like you could build your own torrent files system network with that add on.

Just thought I'd say, I've been using Dropbox for about 3 Months now, and it's been really handy. Cause I use my laptop and desktop fairly equally, I often need the files on my desktop on my laptop. The sharing is a GODSEND! I've been using it to collab with one of my friends who is making a Battlefield 2 Mod (Check it out here) It's just made it so much easier to share the info we need. For example, he was modelling a WiiMote as one of his weapons, but he doesn't have a Wii (Because they SUCK) but I do. So, I merely took a couple of photos of my WiiMote on my laptop's webcam and dropped 'em into dropbox. Voila! Instant, easy sharing and no waiting for GAY Xfire uploads! I LOVE dropbox.

I opted to pay for the extra space, so if one of you free users wants to pass around referral links for the extra space for both of you then go ahead :)
