When I came back from some errands today I had a long awaited box on the front porch.
Inside was the five WD AV-GP 2TB drives that I have been waiting on getting for my NAS build. Months of price watching and trying to figure out is over!

Hi,
I'm very interested in your final build, RAID (5 or 6? 6 right?)set, nas model, and expected workload. I'm about to acquire a similar size raid but I had bad experience with non RAID (AKKS, caviar, etc.) series of WD in RAID-5.
I was going for an adaptec 3xxx series 12 port RAID controller and some RE4-GP disks in a norco server case.
My old stuff ^^:

I went to bed 'sleeping' on if I was going to run RAID 5 or RAID 6... Not sure still, but I'm leaning to RAID 5 just to make sure I get the most storage capabilities from the array. The main goal with this NAS is for movies and you know how quick Blu-Rays fill things up.

I've been running 6tb of the "EADS" version in my WHS machine, 2-1tb drives since last summer and 2-2tb drives since November. I didn't see these "AV-GP" versions at the time or I would have bought them instead since they seem better suited for a server environment. I can say that the "EADS" have been running fine so far, I don't think they are constantly going to sleep and waking up like some people claim they would.
On a side note: I'm getting ready to upgrade my WHS box with two more DVD drives for some multi-drive, unattended ripping love.... WHS + My Movies + anydvd

As your posts states, you had been waiting for that package to arrive. Look for another one due to your place early in the week.
It may help you with another question or two.
Glad to see a monster storage array is being built. 10 years ago, I thought having a few drives to make 1.5T was a a marvel.

I wonder if you can tweak the TLER and Idle setting on these like on the EADS series. I turned on the TLER but did not change the Idle setting and had drives drop from my RAID. After I changed the Idle setting all issues were gone.

I checked on my LCC (Load/unload Count) and the 1tb drives are around 140 in 8080hours, while the 2tb drives are over 21,855 in 1770hours. I went ahead and changed the idle3 setting from 8.0sec to 300sec(the max). I should probably just disable intellipark but I'll wait and see what the changes do to my counts on the 2tb drives.
