Access denied??

Post by Merlin »

I was and am trying to copy the contents of an older drive to another partition on my boot drive. I start the process and I am told that there is a file that I dont have access to. I have no alternate user IDs set up nor did I put any Admin password in the OS when I installed it. Any ideas why this is happeneing and how to get around it?

I'm betting that the file you're trying to copy is in the MY DOC's section of the old drive.

Its a pain in the ass thing windows does. I ran to this working on a XP home machine install that was in an eMachine. Would not allow me access to the Documents and settings folder.

I had get two boxes, boot one to run linux with the old drive in slave, the other the new install of winders. The files I needed were small so I moved them from one to the other with a thumb drive. I had to do it this way due to the fact that the drive would not boot with any other hardware than eMachine stuff and his board craped out.

if you can still boot the old drive, I would swap the drives around so the old drive boots then the new drive is slave, set up a folder some were on the new drive outside of windows then move the files to it.

Maybe this will help

http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

I use it, and it worked on everything I needed it to so far :)

Which file is it?

go into task manager and close everything except the stuff to keep windows running.

can you copy it instead of move it? or are you just copying?

Is it a major windows file?

Mike

will windows recovery console let you move and copy files? might try that also.
