can't analyze/defrag my laptops harddrive

its a dell inspiron i recently got secondhand from my friend, and i'm planning on throwing Linux Ubuntu 6.10 on it, but i can't partition the drive because it just wont let me.
i'd love to post specific details but i've gotta run out for now, but any ideas anyone? i KNOW i have administrative options set up for my user....

just pop in the linux ubuntu cd it will let you partion it there.

yeah unfortunately it didnt work, that was the first thing i tried :\
it runs an error, i'll try it again tomorrow and i'll post specifics

okay so its a PIII Dell Inspiron i got secondhand from my good friends dad, replacing his outdated laptop for his business.
anyhow the deal is when i go to even analyze the disc before defragging, it does NOTHING
i need to do a defrag because i need to partition the drive, because i want to install ubuntu 6.10
any suggestions?

Type services.msc in run and go to RPC, and see of its running on both your computer and the remote one.
