9800GX2 vs GTX280

Post by skier »

the 9800GX2 has all of 16 Stream Processors more, and is $60 cheaper than the GTX 280, does the GTX 280 offer better folding or Gameplay performance?

I'm pretty sure the 9800GX2 folds better. Not sure with the latest drivers though. Buy the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295 instead!

for the price of the GTX295 +10 dollars, you can get dual GX2's which would get you 32 more steam Processors than the GTX295 !!

That's one way of looking at it, and nothing wrong with that! :) For me, I would buy the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295 and save up for another one when the price will come down. That's just me though.

dual GX2's =512 Stream Processors= $500
one GTX295 =480 Stream Processors= $500
dual GTX295's = 880 Stream Processors= $1,000

and for the GX2 you don't need $500 down front, only $250 for one

i just wanna know actual performance numbers, i havnt seen anything with the GX2 in it for months

Just remember that the drivers are different. You can make cases for older tec. I'm just saying that there is a reason for the newer cards. Don't fight progress. That's all I'm trying to say.

Skierkid450, I'm not trying to give you a hard time. I just think there is a reason for newer technology and I think you would be wishing you made the right purchace. Hence your question. Just trying to help. :)

I would get an EVGA 9800GX2 now, and then after about two months or so step up to the 295 which will have dropped about $50-100 by then
Intel E8500 @ 4.0GHz
4GB(2 x 2GB) DDR2 800MHz
EVGA 750i SLI FTW
Seagate 7200.11 500GB HD
EVGA GTX 260 55nm
Antec 630 watt PSU
Samsung 22x DVD/+/-RW Burner
Antec p182 Case

well, i don't want to buy a GX2 and bite the $250 if i can't sell it before I get the 295, besides, i think its gonna have to be after the next series comes out that it will START to come down, like the 8800 Ultra

Personally, although I own a GX2, I do not like it. First off, it runs on SLI (which can be iffy sometimes); single cards just work every time. I miss those days... Second, if you want multiple monitors, according to this NVIDIA page you must use DVI connector #2 and the HDMI port in order to use more than one screen. You cannot use both DVI ports (which is annoying to most people since most people have two monitors not a monitor and a TV! It also runs hot and takes up a lot of space. Not to mention that it needs an 8-pin and 6-pin (as opposed to dual 6-pin on newer cards that use less power). It was a beast in its day, and still is, but in my opinion the trade-off is not worth it. Even if it can be had for $250.
