why not consider the Radeon HD 3850? It's the best sub $200 card.

Good for Crysis??
On say ... medium settings??
He's running medium settings @1024x768 on one of his machines with an 8500, but the fps is a bit low.
I'd like to get him a better card than that if it'll fit under $200.00.

Haven't I seen on here before that someone said the Geforce 7950 was better than some of the newer offerings??

for NOW maybe not long. the radeon 3850 that was suggested above is much better than any nvidia card under 200 out yet. Till the 8800gt gets the 256 version out. and IF it does sell for under 200

Looking at some of the available reviews of the 3850, it appears as though it's a better card than what I'm running.
Is that true???

If it is, hell I might just give him mine and get the new ATI card for myself!
BTW ... this is my son's PC.
Therefore I can forget trying to come out on the better end of the $$ dealings.

Well now I'm confused again ... (Thanks Apop)
Previous to your reply, I hadn't heard of the new offerings from ATI.
After reading reviews and such, and since my board is geared toward Crossfire anyways, I'm considering getting myself a 3870 and giving my son the 8800 I'm running.

Opinions please ....

For the life of me I don't understand why buying a damn video has to be so complicated.
I reckon the manufacturers like it that way.

does your son have a 512mb 8500 or a 256? and if his mobo supports sli you could consider getting another 8500 or buying 2 8600s. if not i would wait until the 8800 gt 256mb comes out and the demand goes down. it should then be around 200

I don't think I'd dump an 8800 gts card for the radeon 3850, here's a graphic of the performance.
Image

As you can see in the graphic unless your running 2 3850 in Crossfire mode your single 8800 out performs it. Is your current 8800 not doing some thing you need it to do? A good general rule (unless your a junkie like me) is not to upgrade unless the functionality of your existing equipment isn't letting you do what you want/need to do.

I'm sure your son would appreciate the 8800 though lol.

Well it sux to be as impatient as I am sometimes. lol

Called my rep in Tiger Direct.
She scratched around and found that they had 4 Radeon 3870 512MB.
They weren't even on the website and she said they went from +4 to -3 inventory immediately after we spoke the first time.
Snatched one of 'em and it's on they way. (Yea she's really good to me. :) )

Thanx for all the input guys.

Hope my unwillingness to wait doesn't bite me in the arse as it has many times before.

So I reckon my son will be getting a slightly used 8800 GTS.
Kids ... some of them have NO idea how good they have it! (Especially mine!)

P.S. Case in point ... he's texting me right now telling me his Razor phone isn't cool enough any longer. He needs a new, COOLER phone.

Just be sure you aren't spoiling them :P

You should take away his razor and give him a brick, and see how he likes that :P

I'm afraid it's a bit too late Dan.
He's beyond hope. Spoiled rotten to the core.
He lives with his Mother, not me.
I'm sure the most of it is my fault. (Just ask his Mother!)

I've built him 2 new computers in the last 6 months.
One for my house and one for his Mother's.
Both of them are better than the PC that I used for years up until I built the one in my sig.
But as a result, we play online together every day, and he's even taken an interest in what I do for a living.
Says he wants to work with me when he turns 18.
It'll be cool if it actually works out that way.
