Using GeForce 6150 but upgrading to 8600GT is ok?
Using GeForce 6150 but upgrading to 8600GT is ok?
My current card is the one that came with the Asus M2NPV-VM motherboard, the GeForce 6150. I know thats pretty minimal. So after looking at a bunch of reviews I ordered the XFX GeForce 8600GT XXX, 256MB, DDR3. Can't afford an 8800 series
Anyhow I mostly play SecondLife and Anarchy Online. Secondlife expecially sucks re: The LAG Monster. Is the XFX 8600GT a good card? And will I actually notice improved performance over the GeForce 6150? There are no guys to ask and my sister knows less than I do, so I thought the ppl here would know. Thx for any info

dude ofcourse you will see a performance leap since 8600GT is a discrete graphic card
Dell Sucks.... In my opinion anyways

The 8600GT will be a massive improvement over your current 6150. Provided that your motherboard is PCIe (if its pretty recent it should be) then you will have no problems upgrading.

The GeForce 9600 GT is gong to replace the 8600 GT and is due out in the next month or so... should be worth the wait if you can tough it out.
The 8600 GT is a great card and XFX is a solid company, so no worries on the choice... The 9600 GT is coming next month, so I just want to make sure you know that if you by the card today in four weeks it is being replaced...

He is actually a she, see her other thread regarding memory.vicaphit wrote:if he can't afford the 8800gt will he be able to afford the 9600gt?
Not that it's a big deal, but you know, it's always nice when people get your gender right when talking about you

Thanks everyone for your advice and info. Yep I'm a girl and most (99.999%) of the tech talk zooms over my head. One guy said something about it being a "discrete card", guess that doesnt mean very quiet tho? I guess a 9600 would be even more expensive than the 8800 series so that'll be a long while in coming.
Anyway it is lots of fun reading the posts and answers everyone puts up. I'm trying to learn stuff that way too

Discrete is the opposite of integrated.
As your current graphics card is integrated onto the motherboard and can't be removed it's called integrated.
Discrete cards are ones that you add in, and I've no idea why they are called discrete
