My Thoughts of the 8600 GT series

Post by IssE »

Well as most people who visited my previous topic know I got the xfx 8600 gt, I have had it for 4 hours now and love it.
I extremely Like the quality of my games now, omg such an improvement from the 6150 LE
I got a 3dMark06 of 103 for that card, but now have a nice 4859. Yet with all the good there are a bit of things I dislike from this card, A) the constant whinning before my pc was pure silent if I was not using my hard drive/dvd extensively, now there is this constant noise from the card (nothing some loud music can't take care of XD). The second and kinda surprising con was I still only get 60 Fps on cs 1.6. But there is an improvement that is it looks much more smoother and smoke gernades don't lag me like hell nonetheless I was looked forward to 100 fps. Next on my list to upgrade = ram, then build my first machine next summer hopefully

Question: I did not disable my 6150 le in the bios, should I? I am thinking that maybe having to cards makes it run better

Congrats!
Disable the onboard vga. It wont make it run better if enabled. The reason is that it uses system resources you use it or not.

Anyway, i wouldnt expect from 8600gt to be noisy.. :( . Is the noise constant from bootup till you play games? (Could it be that 8600gt doesnt support automatic fan speed adjustment? does anyone know?)
In example mine (8600gts) is noisy at boottime but when the OS is booted up (and the nvidia drivers loaded) it becomes silent (even when playing heavy games).

Btw if 60fps is not enough you can always oveclock the card :snakeman:
(If the fps remains steady at 60fps not matter what happens around you check that there isn;t something like max_fps set to 60, lots of games have this)

Actually, you should expect it to be loud, and run warm. The Nvidia reference coolers usually suck, why? cause Nvidia keeps the cost down by creating a cooler that is pretty much bare minimul to the card, so that it does not overheat, but when company's make the cards, they just use to cheap out, the reference cooler.

If you get conductive ink, or a 2B pencil, do the volt mod, get yourself a new cooler, then overclock. And then, I bet you will like this card even more (this thing can performe up to the standards of a 8600GTS if you do some overclocking, SLI these and the cost will be as much as a 8600gts, and performe better.

These cards are not bad at all. I have a 8600GTS, and I am fairly impressed by it. But I will be more impressed once I volt mod and overclock the crap out of it.

You sure V-sinc isn't on? If you see that the FPS never goes above 60 you might have v-sinc on, which will limit FPS

I'm using an XFX GeForce 8600GT XXX card also and it doesnt seem to make much noise as far as I can tell.
eMachines T5010 desktop, modified with Asus M2NPV-VM motherboard, AMD Athlon 64x2 4400+ dual core processors @ 2.3GHZ, 3GB Samsung DDR2-SDRAM PC-6400 (399Mhz)-[DDR2-800], 420 Watt PSU, Windows XP Home Edition and XFX GeForce 8600GT XXX (1/17/08).

As dkarko said, open up the console in CS:S and enter the command "fps_max 100" or "max_fps 100" (it's one of those two, without the quotes of course).
As for the 8600GT being loud, yep! Check out what I had to say about it here... http://www.legitreviews.com/article/486/16/
