NICE, but which is the best value for the $.

I also read somewhere ( maybe here ) that to play the new games out and coming out at the high settings you need at least the 640mb 8800, the 320mb does not perform well on some games :(

640mb is around $320 after rebate, so it is close, but they need to lower it to around $150 for me :)

I never see rebates on UK sites. Maybe it's a US tax thing? I have noticed that US sites never include tax in their prices, at least that's what i have gathered from looking around at a few US sites.

In the UK the prices are almost always displayed with and without VAT and i never see rebates.

Yeah, rebates aren't something I've seen either in the UK. Maybe we just get the straight out savings of like 5% before we buy it (but money off anything doesn't seem to happen very often here).

Monitor is 1280X1024, so I usually set all the games to the same resolution. Some I have to do at 1024X768 since they are old and dont support anything higher :)

Mike

7600GT and Titan Quest are jerky at that resolution, argh. One of these days I will find a REALLY good deal and snag a newer card (if the wife lets me :p)

For resolutions that you are talking about i suggest an 8800GTS 320MB, this card seems to me to be the best value DX10 card you can get, and it performs almost exactly the same as the 640Mb counterpart at lower resolutions. The only issue is with the lower resolutions i believe your CPU can affect the performance of the card, what CPU do you have?

If you are looking for a Dx9 card, then i think the X1950XT cards are the best value, they give really good image quality at a really decent price. The only thing is, you wouldn't get the full benefit of DX10 games when they comes out, but they won't be mainstream for a while yet.

Here in the States we don't have the VAT thing. If I order online from a vendor that doesn't have a "physical presence" in my state I pay no sales tax, just shipping.

The rebate thing is from the manufacturer in order to boost sales. The "instant rebate" is good but the manufacturers like the "mail in rebate" better because they're gambling that most customers won't go through the arcane steps that must be adhered to EXACTLY (and even then you sometimes take months to get the rebate) to save $10 after they've already bought the product. An average consumer will still "feel" like they're getting a deal and will promise themselves to get the rebate sent in but most forget or procrastinate until the time is expired, the company sold it's product and only has to pony up for about %40 of the rebates, (marketing psychology at it's best).

I think the main performance hit for the 320 vs. the 640 will be in games that require high resolution textures and can perform better with larger amounts of memory to reduce caching. I agree that the GTS 320 is probably the best buy on the market right now, certainly for the price, and will perform well for the forseeable future (DX10 and all), especially at the 1280x1024 resolution mark.

My 2 pennies...
