Power supply and XFX 8600 GT

Post by IssE »

My power supply came with my computer when I bought It, I opened it and saw that its max Output is 290 W, Min power requirement is 300W, I my cpu is an x2 3800 and I have 2 sticks of 512 ram, running at 300 mhz
After reading the review I am wondering if my Power supply can handle it. Btw I already ordered the card.

I second getting a bigger better PSU.

Remember to look for better AMPs on the rails rather than just total wattage.

ahh Dan you do listen to the things I post. Dan is right, your pulling on average about 250W. Sounds like you have a generic PSU, that may or may not give you the Ws its rated for. I would suggest that you do not overclock or tax your rig for extended periods of time until you get a new PSU. If you could provide us with detailed specs of your rig and yoru budget for a PSU we could make some suggestions

well there could be some issues, frankly most pre-builts don't use standard atx psus. also it may be a 20pin pus and not a 24pin. We need to know both those things before we recommend a psu

I think you should read this:

http://www.jonnyguru.com/review_details.php?id=134

What that shows on there, is that the wattage ratings on cheap power supplies are not to be trusted.

You should know that most of the system load for the ~190W system consumption will be on the 12v rail. If you like, you can check the rails and their voltages on the sticker on the side of your PSU. Care to write them in for us? or better yet, take a picture of it and show us.

As to looking for 20 or 24 pin mobo connector,
The bit on its own is how big a 20 pin is, and the other bit makes it up to a 24 pin.

If you have a 24pin mobo and a 20 pin PSU, it will look like this:

Don't buy this generic PSU please, waste of 50$ and it probably can't handle alot of power on the 12V rail. Also, make sure it's really an ATX PSU and not some random form factor.

Your local shop doesn't sell anything like Corsair, OCZ or some other known brands I am forgetting?

Yeah, you would need to get a DVI cable then, or use the VGA adaptor with your existing VGA cable.

None.

Skimping on PSU's is not a good idea.

Look for some of these brands: Antec, Fortron, Sparkle, Enermax, Corsair (VX Series)

If your PSU is rubbish, it will shorten the life of components in your PC, and worse, if you actually put too much strain on it then when it does blow it could take out other parts of your computer with it.
