My evga 7970gt idles at 62c and can get up to 90+c when running games like tf2 on max settings!!! Is this normal or is there a problem with my heat sink? Thanks.

I used to have this card and it ran under 50 c with stock heatsink. Might want to try Zalman VF900, really worked well on mine.

Is it a passive heatsink?

If not, you might want to check that the heatsink is making good contact with the card.

No it's not. This EVGA card came with the custom heat sink by EVGA that's supposed to be better than the rest. The only weird thing is my card gets up to 110c (according to ati tool) and I see NO performance issues.

Anyways I ordered a Zalman and hopefully that fixes it... not quite sure how to adjust heatsinks but I'll give a look.

Zalman should help quite a bit I think. I've had good experiences with those personally. Thing is, the passive coolers are always gonna be generally hotter compared to fan cards i think..

most geforce fans are set to 60% of there speed. Crank it up to 80 that should help and you the noise should be the same.

Apply some AC5 would help since most stock coolers use crappy thermal pads. My 7900GT used this pink goo that gave me an idle temp of 70°C and a load over 80°C and close to 90°C
