Anyone know much about this card how it performs ive read a couple of reviews and it has done very nicely one review i read the 3dmark 06 score was 1000 points more then the 8600GT. After getting the tip off that i am going to be given one of these for christmas,(either the GTS or the GT) does it really perform a whole lot better then the GT???
Thanks for your thoughts.

one other thing i noticed about this card compared to the GT is that the GT still has the fan that the 6600GT has and it melted off within the first few weeks, and No i wasnt overclocking and the card is in a very well ventilated case....

Why don't you get an ATI HD3850 instead? It's roughly the same price and performs better.

well, your last post confused the hell out of me. lol. No matter what fan you are ATI or Nvidia. No one can deny the 3850 vs the 8600gts is not even close. if you can think about buying the 8600gts then the 3850 should already be in your hands. I like my 8600gt vmoded to the 8600gts equiv. But, I'm selling it because in a few days I get my 3850. If you are coming from a older card yea the 8600 series is great and all. But, the options are so much better now

lol that sounds like it fits. Just the wording threw me off I guess. Still tell them altho you don't know what you are getting. DAMN THIS NEW GFX CARD CAME OUT. Damn its sick. I wish I could get that one its called the 3850. Proceeding that you say. I'm glad I didn't go out and get the 8600gts instead

If it's for a gift and they asked specifically for a 8600.. just buy a 3850 and add some benchmarks showing how it destroys the 8600

I'm not quite sure how accurate the tomshardware is due to the fact that I have an 8600gt altho its moded to the 8600gts now. I have records I kept while overclocking and games using my card at stock speeds. Comparing them to the chart is slightly off. BUT, its a good overall reference. Altho slightly inaccurate (maybe I could just have got a lucky card) its still a general number to show you the difference on a basic use. And what you can expect in the games listed.
You can trust my words since I don't need to make it sound crazy good.
my 8600gt STOCK
from what I have tested my average FPS for battlefield 2142 at any level. ALL maxed on my old monitor that was only a 1024 x 768. I could get 42 fps PLUS I got much more during normal play. In battle with bots around and explosions going off never really went below 30. they claim 32 is avg.
oblivion 1024 x 768 max quality, using 16af and no AA with bloom AND qarl's texture pack 3. That makes it even harder to run. But, with everything. Maxed I got good frame rates outside. typically from 30-40 in the woods. On that site they claim 18.5 without the texture and 8af not 16. SOO some numbers are off. But, as an average I think its decent.
As of now. I have a 22in monitor @ 1680 x 1050 I only game there since it looks incredible and set settings from there. Now vmodded to an 8600gts and my clock settings are much higher than before. With that said. just say for an example its equal to the 8600gts I think I'm just under it personally.
oblivion texture pack 3 all maxed with bloom @ 1680 x 1050 I still get 25+ outside
battlefield, is at around 40 with all maxed and 1680 x 1050 No AA in either test tho I don't use it

AF makes things like trees and fences look prettier, well smoother.
And AA smoothes out jaggies on 3d shapes.
Some older games don't support AA at all (like halo) so you wont see it working there.
for a quick idea of what it should be doing, see this neoseeker comparison between different AA types:

AA makes a HUGE difference. The structures in the background of a game that are going straight up. Look like they crawl. If you don't notice turn it off and glad to be you. I notice it so I either use Higher resolution or AA I can't play a jaggy low res game it looks horrible. AF. You might not notice in a FPS because you generally are moving at a high pace and don't pay much attention. But, there is a noticeable difference when you look for it. If you don't notice its the same thing. Be glad you don't and enjoy what you think is great without being unsatisfied

I never noticed any thing bad about my graphics (asus 7300 GS 512) until I got the 8800 GT, when I fired it up I had one of those moments of clarity. The graphics were amazing, so I plugged the 7300 back in @1280 x 1024 in Company of Heros and reran the performance test, the 8800 was cranking 138 frames, and the 7300 chugging 23 choppy with jagged edges and all. Up til the time I ran the 8800 I just thought that was the way things were supposed to be. (minus the choppyness cause I was running 800 x 600)

Then it does a readout of Nvi(some other numbers/letters i cant remember) But i only have one more night to wait then i can play games again!!!

lol I'm serious if you don't notice it its a better thing. haha, either way tho sounds like your vid card is on its last legs. Being you have a 6600.. that means you probably have agp? and finding a new agp card is going to cost more than just getting a new mobo. well then you need a processor.. so looks like you will be rebuilding soon? lol
but, before conclusions are made, get a camera out or pen and paper, when you see the bsod take a pic of those numbers and letters. those numbers and letters are very important to diagnosing the problem

getting a whole new setup tomorrow? I just reread that well. that is good no need to figure it out lol. You find out if you are getting what card yet? even if you get the 8600gts you will be satisfied because its so much stronger than the 6600gt

Well, since you ask if i have an AGP no i dont i think i was given a rare 6600GT that is PCi E i have no clue how rare it is but i know three other people that have a 6600GT and theirs is AGP, but maybe it is just the choice that they made.

that is kinda weird. Since you aren't changing your set up its a good idea to see if you get that bsod and the numbers to make sure its just video and not anything else.
