NVIDIA GeForce 9800GX2 Video Card Pics w/ the Cooler Removed

Post by Apoptosis »

GeForce 9800GX2 naked card photos are on the web. What is interesting is that it uses a core labeled G92-450-A2, which is different than what the GeForce 8800 GTS and GeForce 8800 GT use. You can also see the Samsung GDDR3 memory chips and the bridge chip that handles cross-board communication just like the PLX chip that ATI uses on the Radeon HD 3870 X2.

I saw an article about the same thing right after seeing this thread, it read:
DOES THE THOUGHT of naked graphics cards get you all clocked up under your heatsink? Does your thermal paste go all gooey at the prospect of bare silicon being exposed to the elements?
my answer: Yes
So when should we be seeing this hitting the shelves?(or when should Apop be receiving one)

*hole lets the air in through the cards, and is exhausted out the back.

Yeah, I just wanted an excuse to scribble with my graphics tablet.

Bingo ^_^

Not forgetting the fact that they are SLI'd into one PCIe slot making the Mobo and OS think they are one card.

Take two cards. Get some spacers, drill a few holes. Put the spacers between the cards and screw them. There you go, you just made yourself a GX2.

It's interesting that Intel and nVidia find interesting ways to get around things, intel - quad cores, and nVidia - this, yet we're all pretty sure it will outperform the 3870X2 :( ....just like the C2Q vs the Phenoms, but actually, the phenoms were just bad.

you'd think that would be more efficient, mabie once technology gets a hair smaller, or once more people realize how well it COULD work

edit -

yeah, i guess that is what they are trying to plan, how well it works and how soon we'll see it....who knows.

GPU's arent like CPU's, new GPU's come o market every 9 months or so where as new a CPU architecture only comes around every few years. Nvidia and AMD want to get as much mileage from their cores as they can. The amount of time and money required to produce a multiple GPU PCB is almost nothing compared to what it takes to design and produce a new GPU. Intel uses this same strategy for their quad core processors, under the IHS its two dual core dies, they did the same thing with their Pentium D procs.

I would never of thought that they would put one card on each side of the cooler but I guess they had to or the 9800 GX2 could've been a 3 or 4 slot video card which would be insane

Thanks for the info... :)
