then it's not useless if the consumer gets it within 3 months. marketing tool, yes. but useless? i think not. if i get money back as an incentive then it's only worthwhile if i needed the product beforehand and i had the ability to buy it then. win-win for consumer and company. i get some cash back and they sold off their product and still managed a profit.

maybe someone can explain?? The 8000 series is older than the 9000 series right?? If yes than how can this be that a newer card , 9600GT sells for $199 less a rebate while the older ( and should be inferior or why sell the 9600 at all) 8800GT sells for 249 less rebate. I know I am ranting again...sorry but you all know me by now. Why would they ( NVidia) even come to market with a new model card IF it weren't better than its earlier models? I saw a thread today where someone said they had a budget of 300+ on a vid card and what was recommended was a card that came to market..one year ago. I am truely confused as to why they would do that...come out with a new card that is inferior to an older model. If it is intentionally targeting a lower end consumer than why not name it something like a 8800xx( something other than GTS etc.) to let people know it is on par with the 8800 but less in some way. Coming out with a 9600 makes people think it is new and better since the 8000 is better than the 7000. etc on down. Finaly if the 9600 is better why is it cheaper and less recommended?

You're missing out the key point, its a 9600 card. So it is from a better series of cards, but it's intended to replace the 8600 cards only.

Within each sub-series, eg: X800 or X600, there are also then different performing cards: vanilla (it has no letters after, but is not really seen now, the last one was the 6800); GT; GTS; and on the highest card range only, GTX.

Nvidia have broken the trend with the 9k cards and released the midrange card first (so the X600 series), but to be fair they sell the most of thoese anyway (the high performance sector is only a small percentage of the total market). So going by nvidias past trends, its easy to see why you would mistake the 9600 as being the highest performance part nvidia is offering.

Yep, the 9600 is a midrange card, whereas the 8800 series is high end. A better comparison that will make sense with pricing, etc is the 9800 series vs. the 8800 series. 8)

That clears things up a bit but I am still confused as to why they would make the second number more significant than the first why not follow logic which would say that any 9xxx card is superior to any 8xxxx card. Using the nomenclature they have choosen simply makes it confusing for those of us who need an explanation in the first place. They list their cards ( for drivers search purposes) by the first number not making any mention of the second number. I do understand your explanation and thus how they do it. I just don't understand why they would choose to do it that way.

If you think of 8xxx with the 8 portion as the year of the model (model class) then the x600 the 600 portion as the model it helps (me at least).

In a sense though a lot of people would think that a 9000 series would be better than an 8000 series. Which I believe is why they market it that way. It's always been that way in computers though. Since the beginning with the 8088, 8086, 286, 386 series processors. I don't see it changing any time soon.

I just wish they would take the cryptography out of it. From what I know the GPU that is on each card has a number as well ( G92 on an 8800GTS) I think ATI uses R followed by a 3 digit number with the higher number meaning better GPU. What reason could there be for that other than they want to keep us in the dark somewhat, for marketing reasons, as to which card is actually the high end. It seems that ATI had three or four cards that all had the same 9800xx but they did not all have the same GPU. In my oppinion all 8800 Nvidia should have the same GPU in them so we ( or me since everyone else seems to know it anyway) would know at a glance which card is better.

keep in mind nVidia is out to make a profit. plain and simple as that. so if they have good products, they're going to sell.
also bear in mind that your confusion will benefit them as long as you choose nVidia over ATI, so i'm sure they'd rather you buy the latest and greatest that you can afford rather than their past offerings, such as you maybe buying a 9600 card over an 8600 card. (consumers thinking newer is way better)

in the grand scheme of things, any GPU is better than no GPU so as long as a 8800GT or 8800GTS out-performs any 8600GT or 8600GTS, then nVidia has done what they set out to do: make a profit off your need for a video solution. thats why a lot of people come to the review sites to compare the different variations and flavors of cards.

once you get how the companies name the cards then its no biggie to figure out the rest.

Oh I know its all about the $$$ It always has been. BUT.....the newest 9600 is less expensive than the 8800 from 6-8 months ago so that makes your argument a little less accurate. What I am saying is this...." even IF your business model is based on maximizing profit ( everyone's is) rather than making a name for yourself as the best in your field The naming of GPUs does not make sense...IF the 9600 is supposed ( for marketing reasons) to be the newest and best then why price it lower than the 8800?? I know for sure that IF they had made the 9600 more expensive the end user would have thought it was better and as such would have purchased more of them before they realized it was not as good as the 8800 series. As it stands now they have spent all the money to make, market, and support a video card that is not as good as its previous versions. Why is gods name would you ( from a business and profit standpoint ) sell a vid card that is cheaper and worse than your other offerings. ATI has yet to come out with a card that can compete with the 8800 GTS so there is not real pressure from the marketplace to improve upon it especially since there are not any games or other non- professional applications that could or would use it. AMD came out with its 64 bit CPU at least 3 years ago and there are still very few mainstream programs that use a 64 bit environment, hell as far as I know Intel still doesn't use 64 bit in its CPUs and they are kicking AMDs butt. I believe that and old saying can be translated into any business--- IF a company makes the success of its people its number 1 goal it will, by default, be successful.. translated into the Video card market...IF you make the hapiness of your customers your number 1 goal you will, by default, make the best video cards on the market at any price. Everyone knows that the Mustand GT is faster than the escort so Video card makers should make it obvious which one of their products is better so crazy peoplle like me don't start to think they are trying to trick me. I DONT LIKE TO BE TRICKED.
