OC'd 8800GTS for sure, but I'd still take 2 if they were giving them away...................

i was on the fence with OCed GTS, and "Why did they launch.."

I still really think you need to get the Palit 8800GTS Sonic card off of Brian and compare those two, it'd be very close performance.

Be a laugh if the GTS won out.

I was just reading something the other day that said Nvidia will be releasing their next generation 99XX cards come this July.................. . If this is true, it's be totally stupid to waste your money on any of Nvidia's newly released cards right now.

Why did they launch this product... when retail overclocked GTS's come at equal or higher clocks.

"bah!" i say! BAH!

if i can afford it i'll just get a lesser priced (still a huge upgrade for me) 8800GTS 512Mb if they don't update the actual chip/technology before i can really splurge on something better like a 9800X2.

not epic fail at all just not the leap a lot of us were expecting...
new tech please nVidia?

Lost for words. Really needed to upgrade, saw what the 9800GX2 to the 8800ultra and the same with the 9600gt did. Then this... this... 8800GTX with a new paint job. Yes i know its not the same but when you get leaps in performance and then stagnation kinda some how sets off every red bell i have.

This is exactly why we all NEED a healthy competitive AMD. Without them Nvidia and Intel will only need to release slight improvements of their existing stuff. A healthy AMD pushes them to to actually work and pump out Conroes, Penryns and G80's. Parts that further the evolution of the PC and to a certain extent civilization itself. I know I might be blowing it out of proportion but where do you think folding@home or the Human Genome Project would be if we were all still stuck with Netburst CPU's and GeForce 5600's?

This is just a product refresh, similar to the 8800 GTS G80 -> 8800 GTS G92.

It' not intended as an upgrade for anyone who already has a high end 8800 series card.

Nvidia didn't release anything that advances technology though!

I have no clue why they released this card with these specs, other than this: The fans expected a release. Pointless imo. :-k

The people over at Nvidia are not stupid, so I am still expecting some good things in the next quarter from them. Keep your eyes peeled. 8)

The biggest question for me remains this:
If 9800GTX is the same overclocked 8800GTS 512, what's 9800GTS supposed to be? It's supposed to be a little worse than the 9800GTX but better than 8800GTS 512, but there is really not that much room in there for a new card. Are we going to end up with 3 clone models?

Well.... I know why they released it. NVIDIA are greedy bastards. :| Although I can understand that they want to eke out everything they can from the investment they had to put into G80, just as the will need to do for the expensive next-gen core. And they still get to play with the ATI 9600XT/9800 name of old doing it. Wasn't any performance reason for the 9800GTX since the 720-740Mhz 8800GTS 512mb cards can beat them.

Between D10U-30 and GT200 and all these dates listed inside the Q3-Q4 range over the last couple days, at least it will be within the year before something truly new arrives. Anyway it makes a sort of twisted bit of sense to launch a GPU that is rumored to be 2x the performance of a 8800GTS 512mb with a much faster CPU generation.

I was actually looking forward to this card before it came out. I was thinking of building an uber-machine and was thinking that a brand-spanking-new 9800GTX would be great! Then, I read a review and it's nothing special. It seems like they launched it just so they could have a higher numbered card out there for people to drool over. The thing they forgot to consider, I guess, is that the people who would actually spend that much on a card read reviews before buying and no sane person would buy this one if they already had an 8800 in their machine. I guess it's a good option if you're still sitting on an 8600-series or lower or switching over from ATI.

I'm looking at ATIs mainly right now because I'm so disappointed in this. I'll consider the 9600GT just because of the bang-for-buck it's got.

Exactly what happened to me, I have been looking to upgrade my 8800GTS 320mb for awhile now, but I'm not going to spend that kind of money unless it's another future proof chip. G80 lasted two years, I want my next GPU to last just as long, or at least come close. I don't want rebadged hardware.

I am really hoping ATI's 4000 series cards completely show up NVIDIA's GT200. I'll be laughing so hard all the way to the ATI 4000 ordering page...

I'm in the same boat now. I've basically decided to buy a cheap 3850 to last as long as it needs to before the next generation comes out. I'm not gonna waste money on a re-named card. I don't mind spending $120 on a short-term fix card, but no way would I spend $400 or more on a card that just just seems like a re-badged 8800.

I have an 8800GTS 512 and there is absolutely no reason I can see at this time or the near future to upgrade this wonderful card. This is absolutely the best video card that I have ever owned and it runs everything that I throw at it with ease. It would be money poorly spent to upgrade it anytime soon, and I even have the EVGA step-up plan option.

I can understand your situation though as I would not be happy with the 8800GTS-320, or the 8800GTS-640 for that matter. In retrospect, my choice to hold off and wait on the G92 was a wise one.
