9600GT Opps Question

Post by SilverGhost_511 »

Just recently I purchased parts and began building my new system. For the video card I went with the XFX 9600GT. Without having to explain, I ended up getting 2 of them and at the time I was not even considering SLI. The main board I had chosen to build my system on is a JetWay HA04 Extreme, it uses the AMD 790FX & SB600 Chipset, north and south. Just in case it helps with my eventual question, the proc I went with is the AMD8650 Tri core, 2 gigs of G. Skill 1066 DDR2.

Just so everyone understands, one of the main reasons I did not think about SLI is that other than what it is, I really know not much about it, same with crossfire. Also, SLI was not my intention anyway, it was an accident that I ended up with the 2 cards but now that I have them, what the hell, I might as well give it a go. So here is the problem...

This JetWay board comes, and this is straight from the manual, AMD Crossfire ready. I thought that AMD was an SLI thing and Intel used the CrossFire thing, and that I relate to ATI being CrossFire and NVidia as being SLI. Any way, with these 2 NVidia cards is there not a hacked driver out there that would allow me to run them SLI? I see a lot of this type of discussion going the other way, by that I mean making Crossfire work on SLI boards but I haven't seen a lot of making SLI work on Crossfire boards.

So can we get a discussion about this going on? Any help or advice would be great!

AMD and is not an SLI thing, it all depends on what chipset a board uses that determines if its a Crossfire or SLI board but these days AMD is Crossfire(since they bought out ATI), and Intel is SLI.

As for a hacked driver, there are some but they don't support the newer cards like the 9600GT so you are out of luck in that respect.

I don't know if this is too late to suggest but my advice is to return the cards from where you bought them from and get a 9800GTX since you can't run 2x9600GT in SLI on a Crossfire board. Either do that or get a HD4850 or HD4870 when they are out at the end of this month.

Its always a good idea to do some reading or ask around when purchasing new hardware that you aren't quite sure about.

ATi multi-gpu setup = Crossfire
Nvidia multi-gpu setup = SLI

SLI can only really be done on boards with Nvidia chipsets right now, so unless you buy a new motherboard you are out of luck.

It was never in my thoughts to go SLI or X-Fire in the first place anyway. I just thought that since I some how accidentally wound up with the extra video card I'd try asking about it. Thanks for the replies by the way. The Mainboard and the one Vid card is what I was after in the first place so now I'll just figure out what else I can do with the extra video card. Bet my boy the gamer would love to trade me for the 6700LE he has right now...wonder what kinda chore I could get out of it from him?????

LOLOL

Thanks guys!
