Hey, All,
I am trying to decide on whether to get a 9600 GT (there is a drawing on LR at http://forums.legitreviews.com/about15855.html for the card) or get the 9600 GSO. I do know that the GSO is just the 8800 gs relaunched, but I would like to know a couple things:
1) Does the GSO play crysis relatively well? Meaning about 30 fps?
2)With a bit of overclocking, could a GSO perform as well or near to a GT?
Any advice is always appreciated,
Tekgek

Re: 9600 GT or 9600 GSO
About Crysis, it's not really the hardware killer everyone claims it to be. Even if you get low framerates (25-30) in Crysis you'll find it still playable. 8600GT and up should be able to handle it on Medium settings.
It depends entirely on the resolution you'll be gaming at though. I play at 1680x1050 with everything on Very High and 2x AA using an 8800GTS 512. If you play at say, 1440x900 you will probably have no trouble playing Crysis at High/Very High with no AA using the 9600GSO/8800GS.
If you want my honest opinion though, the 9600GT's and 8800GT's are going for so cheap after rebates that I'd rather just get one of those.

Yeah but crysis on 1920 x 1080 will fry the GSO if you ask me... or will it, I don't know I am not a Video Card expert so really I don't know why I am posting here... it makes as much sense as this guy's eyes do!

You're right, if you have a 22" monitor or up you're going to want some bigger firepower than a GSO because Crysis starts to slaughter all cards at high resolutions.DemonicDerek wrote:Yeah but crysis on 1920 x 1080 will fry the GSO if you ask me... or will it, I don't know I am not a Video Card expert so really I don't know why I am posting here... it makes as much sense as this guy's eyes do!

It will be fine for 1280x1024 at decent settings depending what you consider playable
Re: 9600 GT or 9600 GSO
Okay, I have downloaded the Crysis demo and have been playing around with it on my weak little 8500 gt (you can probably see why I want to upgrade ) and on 800 X 600 I have been getting good framerates, with everything on super low settings. I figure that if my little 8500 can handle crysis at low settings, then the GSO should should make mincemeat out of the game at medium settings, which is what I consider playable. So, in short, I think, that for frugality's sake, I will be going with the GSO. I have a 20 inch monitor, but I never play games at the monitor's native resolution, just becasue I prefer higher framerates over better graphics.
Again, thanks for all the advice, and I will use it. ASUS has a good deal on the GSO (only 104 dollars ) at Newegg.
Thanks,
Tekgek

Alright, card came today. I have been playing crysis for the last couple hours, and it is awesome. Settings are on medium with a display resolution of 1280X1024. Frame rates are through roof. One final question: How well does the 9600 GSO overclock? I am planning on doing so.

Re: 9600 GT or 9600 GSO
my 8800gt plays crysis at all custom (natural mod, great improvement over stock, and its harder on video cards) with 2xaa at 1440x900 and gets about 20-30 fps, there are occasional times when i can feel it getting sluggish (ie, HUGE firefights, more than 10 enemies, which never really happens unless you play like me and put god mode on and then just run into the middle of a heavily fortified emplacement mowing them all down with the mini gun) and its cheap now to, so i would recommend that if you can afford it, ive seen it for <150

after all,9600GSO is cheaper than GT,and the performance is not bad.
