BFG GTX 260 OC PROBLEM!

Post by MattMurray »

I'm officially at my wits end with my card.
Essentially, I purchased my GTX 260 and I was mistaken about the power output of my psu.
The games I play don't run well unless I'm running at full power.

So anyway,

I went out of my way to purchase the 550watt power supply for my video card and I've seen absolutely NO improvement.
I can't even play Call of Duty 4 on low graphics settings without a poor frame rate.

This has been very frustrating and BFG tech support has been far from helpful.
If there is some sort pf procedure I need to go though to get the maximum output from this video card, please point this out to me!!

Appreciate it!

My Specs:

Mobo: Foxcon 45gmx
Video Card: Nvidia BFG GTX 260 OC
PSU: 550W
Ram: 2gb
Processor: Intel Duo Core 2.2ghz

For the record, I've upgraded and downgraded drivers, so I don't think that would be the issue.

PLEASE help. ](*,)

Did you run a driver cleaner program (like driver cleaner pro) between the new card install and driver upgrades/downgrades?

What is the make/model of the PSU you bought?

I'd run CPU-Z and GPU-Z to make sure your processor, memory and video are running at the right frequency first. If that is correct I'd do what was mentioned above and clean out the registry using a driver cleaner.

Then I'd use a benchmark like 3dmark and compare it to other systems like yours online with their automated service to see if it scores like comparable systems.

Your motherboard has Intel GMA 950 graphics in the chipset, so be sure to disable that and make the PCIe graphics the primary device in the BIOS. This is likely just a simple BIOS issue or driver issue. Be sure you have the latest motherboard BIOS while you are at it since your board has an IGP.

I decided to speak to BFG tech support and they said that my card requires 38amps. Apparently mine has only 36 which isn't sufficient...I didn't think 2amps would make a big difference. Apparently I was wrong. :-k

yea those amps will get ya..I had same issue with my gtx280..had a 650 watt psu that I thought was more than capable..but with only doing 18amps per rail out of 4(and if im assuming correctly I only used 2 rails since i only hooked up 2 cables to the card) 36 amps was definitely not enough for a card that need 42 and it definitely let me know that with its nice red light in the back..didn't know that til i ran into it myself..so i got a new power supply and it fixed that issue..not sure how rails work on those things but I'm assuming that's what my issue was then..

That is a hard lesson for many builders to learn: Never cheap out on the PSU!

Well nows a good time to buy at Newegg , 'caus there is a 20% off code 20PSUFEB that works on ALL psu they sell .

I'd recommend the Corsair units myself . Its too bad the price of the Corsair 1000hx has gone up $30 in the last two days , otherwise the price would have been $163 after rebate and coupon code (lowest price to date) . Even at $193 its still a good deal and good for future proofing (imo) .

Criteria: PSU must be 830W or higher to qualify for the 20% discount.

Nah, not a correction, more of an addendum.

I found out the hard way when Newegg refused to give me the discount for a 600w PSU stating, "Although you've entered a valid promo code 20PSUFEB, your order does not currently meet the code's usage criteria.".
