Recently, we’ve seen a few articles that compare Windows 7 and Vista performance using currently posted NVIDIA beta Windows 7 graphics drivers.
Specifically, these articles compared NVIDIA’s latest Vista WHQL driver, which was posted on March 10th, versus NVIDIA’s Windows 7 Beta driver, which was posted on March 3rd. Since these two drivers are from different code branches (the Vista driver being from a newer code branch), they do not have the same bug fixes or performance optimizations.
Performance differences between Windows 7 and Vista are due to differences between the NVIDIA driver branch codes and NOT differences between the operating systems themselves. These driver coding differences may cause misleading conclusions about Vista versus Windows 7 performance.
In the very near future, NVIDIA will be releasing a release candidate driver that uses the same code branch for both Vista and Windows 7. At that time, you will be able to make accurate performance comparisons between the Windows 7 Beta and Windows Vista.
We strongly urge you to wait for this driver before evaluating graphics performance on Windows 7.
