From reading around it seems that 8800GT/9800GT SLI is about equal to a 260 in performance, and i think that's the old (non core 216 260).
GTS250 is a rebadged 9800GTX+ so in will be quite a bit faster than the 9800GT/8800GT, which in turn should beat the GTX260.
This puts it as the best performing setup, providing all the games you play scale well with SLI.
If you want fps consistancy, the GTX260 is probably the way to go, but if your games work well with SLI then the GTS250 SLI will be the best performing option.

i lol'd at the Palit consumer reviews when i saw them when i had my search
i'd personally go for that 260 as SLI performance is FAR from linear in 90% of games out there.(at least with my GSO's) SLI helps, but just still isnt THAT good yet

is a 9800GT 1GB better than the 260 beacuse the memory is more?

of course not, 896MB is plenty, the 192 shader 260 can manhandle any 9800GT across the board
lets put it this way: i have an ATI x1650 PRO 512MB with 12 Pixel Pipelines(lol that i'm even using that term), would you expect it to outperform a 9600GSO 384MB with 96 shaders?
as far as nvidia:nvidia comparisons go,
more shaders=better card regardless of clocks/memory in pretty much all cases

any idea what FPS on COD4 i might get with the 260?

well considering i get 90 with a GSO, i'd say about 200
but it depends on the rest of the system really, i can pretty much guarantee 120 though at highest settings

quad 2.5
8GB RAM,
resolution 1600X1050
so the palit would be better cause it have more shaders?

yeah, by a lot
my Dual core runs a lot faster and quads arent a huge performance difference from core2duo's in games, but i only have 1/4 the ram lol

weird, you would think you would get more performance with the 260 rather than the 250.

The GTX 260 has 216 shaders, gts 250 has 128
Shaders/stream processors/processing cores are all the same

Try not to get hung up too much on paper specs, as for example I'm sure you're aware a 3GHz AMD chip isn't the same performance as a 3GHz Intel chip, and so the same is true even in graphics card series by the same people (i.e. 9800 can't be spec compared to 260).
The only surefire way to know anymore is to look up and find benchmarks, which is what I did before I replied the first time

i would personally go for the GTS 250 in SLI but then a single GTX 260 although is lower spec than the 250 in SLI but when you get some more money you can get a 2nd GTX 260 and as for frame rate in cod4 you wont get more than 90 as that is the max frame rate infinity ward have allowed and in COD MW2 you would get the same 90 frames max with either 250 and 260 in SLI!
