GTX 1070 - no display

I have a somewhat older MSI P67A-C43 (B3) motherboard that doesnt have integrated graphics. I tried upgraded the video card last night from a ATI 6970 to a GTX 1070. When I power on the system I get nothing. no post, bios or anything - I have an Antec 750w PSU and did connect the 8pin pci-e connection properly.

Before I ship this card back I wonder if anyone has some ideas? I put the 6970 back in and tried to install the Nvidia drivers but the install stops with a message "no hardware detected" - Is there a way to force the drivers to install? I am going to update the MB bios tonight to the latest version.

use display driver uninstaller to uninstall all amd drivers and then run it again to uninstall all NVidia drivers and reinstall NVidia driver and you should be good to go :) here is the link. scroll to the bottom and download latest version and run as I said above.

well the problem is a catch-22. I cant install the nVidia drivers unless it detects the card, I cant use the card since no video output. no integrated graphics on MB either.

I went on MSI forums and there is a chance that a BIOS update will allow the MB to see the card. Worst case I get a new MB, CPU, RAM out of all this. :drinkers:

If its not booting with the card in, could be something in the board or just a DOA card.

Do you have another system that you can try the new card in?

short answer no, unless I wanted to build a rig with spare parts quick to test.

is the bios not detecting the gpu?

I would build a quick and dirty one just to make sure the card is good or bad before taking further steps.

Oh and 1070 - I am jealous

I am not sure since I can't see anything. I have to assume not

of course. a p67 board don't make use of onboard graphics. well that's kills that option out. I guess your only option is build a quick test rig from your spare parts and go on the offence and hopefully get it working ;)

I updated the BIOS and MSI support thought that might do the trick.. it did not :( . I am due for a refresh anyway so just picked up a new CPU, MB and RAM.

fair enough if that's the only way to go then go for it. what did you pick up?

ok so my new parts came yesterday.. and this is getting frustrating.. here is what I picked up.

ASUS H170 PRO GAMING LGA 1151 Intel H170 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Intel Core i5-6500 6MB Skylake Quad-Core 3.2 GHz LGA 1151

CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2133

When I initially hooked everything up I got nothing.. system wouldn't power on. I took out the 1070, still wouldn't power on. unscrewed all the screws holding down the motherboard (powers on) put video card back in - no screws in motherboard. Will not even power on. This is really stating to bum me out.

1) how am I even supposed to use this board if it wont power on with the screws holding it to the case.

2) why would the video card even cause it from powering on.

3) I am returning the card.. I tried it in another system and just got a black screen also. I honestly don't think that the card is the problem but I am running out of ideas.

from what you saying it seems like a grounding issue but for the system to do the same thing when the gpu to plugged in is just plain weird. if you tested it in another system you can be sure the card is doa as it gave same results :(

I had a similar problem with an ASUS Crosshair.
Asus had me put a small piece of electrical tape over each Mobo standoff, then screw the Mobo down.
Yes it worked!
Hope this helps!

I ordered some nylon standoffs. I figured it was shorting out - one thing after another with this card. Sending the GPU back today. One good thing was since all these problems and having to go back on Newegg to get an RMA going I noticed the MB is now offering a free DDR4 8GB kit with purchase. I online chatted with a newegg rep and they agreed to send me the kit!!

If its all in the case still, screw it down, and unhook the power/reset button wires. Try and start the system up by briefly bridging the power switch pins with a small screw driver/metal pin/paper clip... if it fires up, its in the case switches. Still no dice. Setup everything out of the case, I like the box the boards come in, and hook it all up. If it powers up then, there is a short in the case somewhere, either between standoffs and the board or along the back somewhere.

If it doesn't fire up, remove card, try again. If it fires then, could be bad card or weak PSU. If you can bum a PSU off someone to try go that route to rule out the PSU. That fails, RMA the card.

Card has been sent back.. I tried the card in three other PC just to be sure.. still need to figure out what was/is shorting the MB out when screwed in

Borrow fingernail polish from a lady friend and coat the end of all the standoffs. Take care to keep it off the threads.

Works like the old school fiber washers that used to come with cases.
