Ever since Dell first made light of a Quad SLI rig, rumors have been here and there about quad SLI for the rest of us. Hence:

Graphics warfare sure is interesting. For us a performance increase, for them $$$.$$ increase.

I can tell you for a fact that Quad SLI is coming to consumers in systems other than the Dell. Just don't expect to see cards from nVidia partners for some time.

I never doubted when I first heard of the Dell Quad SLI rig, it would come out to the mainstream other than via Dell. To much at stake to leave it in Dells hands alone. Besides, that tactic would tick of the custom gaming builders like Alien-ware and so forth.
What makes you think we won't see any of the dual GPU chip 7900gtx flavour for a while? This would be a great blow by Nvidia to counter ATIs latest.

As expected&proven the consumer market for dual-6800Ultra was so tiny it made losses to companies like ASUS who made them. But the loss wasn't great because they didn't produce much of it.
Same goes for all the dual-7800GT card you see at computer shows, those cards will never make it out to the consumer this time. Nor will any future ones.
It's so much cheaper to go with dual cards anyway.

Wow, when will processors catch up and stop bottlenecking the GeForce awesomeness? And at this rate, we'll need external graphics cards or else they'll get too hot (yes I read somehting about the people behind PCI-E working on some cable for EXTERNAL graphics. Slap phase change on and watch it go....)
