Upgrading from a 7800Gt just isn't worth it IMO
Wait till after Conroe and the next-gen cards come out, they will have support for DX10

i think you can consider one of the 7950 cards, where they bundle 2 cards in one.

You would only see a marginal increase in FPS by upgrading your current card. Onboard memory isn't everything on a videocard either. Just because a card has 512MB of RAM doesn't mean that it will run a game any faster than one with 256MB.

My suggestion is that you should wait until the DX10 compliant cards come out before you upgrade to another 7xxx.

upgrading would be a waste.

wait for fall and the new direct X 10 gfx cards

Geforce 8xxx series and ATi's X2000 and up series.

lol im still on a good "old" 9800 Pro (never thought it call it old!).

But yeah, theres no point in getting new GFX cards now, especially with DX10 round the corner... i am waiting for those cards personally and if you want the best performance with Vista, you should seriously consider it too! :)

10x card upgrade will cost you a ton, but if you got the cash, why not wait..;) Top 10x video card > $500 (or more) Vista > (knowing M$) $300 at least unless you get a hack version..................

Its up to how much cash you have/want to spend and how long the next card has to last you.

If your next card is to last, then wait for the DX10 cards to come out.

In terms of how the 7800gt to 7900gtx compare, i found a user review here:

not sure how your rig compares to the one used for testing, and these are all at a high rez, lower rez's will have lower gains.

I really wouldn´t recommend to upgrade from a 7800gt, I think you should wait for the next gen dx10 capable cards, the fps difference you will notice from the upgrade right now would be small

7xxx cards won't do DX10 that's why I said it'll cost a ton to go to DX10...........

NO current cards can do DX10. They will still run DX10 games, but just with DX9 features................unless ATI arn't telling us something..... ;)

Yep, it will be like nowadays DX8 cards running DX9 games, they will be compatible but you will lose a lot of features and performance

If you know of any current cards that are DX10 compliant, I'd love to raed the info and such. I've seen nothing to date that says any of them are. there's a ton that say that they are built for Vista, but that's only because there is version DX9L built into Vista to support older cards.
Also embedded into Windows Vista is DirectX 9.0L to allow for compatibility with DirectX 9 components. Think of it like two separate DirectX systems. We will have DirectX 9.0L for DirectX 9 hardware and we will have DirectX 10 for DirectX 10 capable hardware

Just keep the 7800GT. The only reasons to buy a 512MB videocard are:
1. Super-high-res gaming (above 1600x1200, don't ask about why I have two 7900GTXs @ 1280x1024)
2. You want to play Quake 4/Doom 3 at Ultra Quality (not worth it but hey if you can afford it go ahead)
3. You have too much money. Send some to me.
