Post by hainer36 »

just curious here but would it be benefitial to have 2x6800GTs in SLI with hacked drivers (since my board doesnt officially support SLI...in sig) rather than having my 1xX850XT

PS- i knew i would get more views with that thread title

You will get more performance with the 2x6800GT, furthermore, you will have SM3. If you are sure you will get it running with the hacked drivers and it won´t give you problems in the future, go for it. But first of all, Are you going to buy a 6800GT, 2x6800GT or you have the three cards now?

I'd say but a 7800GT instead (7900GT if your budget can stretch), SLI is only worth it if you like to game at uber-resolutions, and if the game is optimised for it if its not in effect the second card could be useless in some situations.

Furthermore, there is also the increased heat dissipation, power consumption and noise of two cards in SLI. :P

Unless you just want bragging rights!

getting 2 7600GT's in SLi would be almost equvilant to 1 7900GT

There are such hacked drivers, but make sure your board actually has PCI-E 8x or 16x slots. Some boards (like my 945P-A) say "dual 16x slots" but if you read the manual it says "Supports two physical 16x PCI Express slots. The second slot runs at 4x speed." Talk about crippling....

If you have to buy both of them, I wouldn´t buy them, you can buy two 7600GT at the same price or only a 7900GT which would be the best option as you will get the same performance with one card ( with less heat) and you wouldn´t have problems with games which don´t work in SLI.
