UNDER-clocking 7900GTX

You heard me. For 2D mode, is it safe to underclock the memory? I tried using ATITool to cut memory from 1600MHz effective to 400MHz effective and the computer froze and displayed weird lines.
How LOW can I go to reduce heat production? I know the core throttles down in 2D...

I think running a processor or videocard at speeds lower than the standard speed won't work. Don't ask me why but I don't think you will be successful with this.

Should be fine........but don't use ATITool.....that's for ATI cards ;)
Try rivatuner.......ATI undervolts their cards in 2D too. I undervolt mine even more for lower temps. I don't think you can change the voltage on NV cards though.

for under or overclocking use NVtweak (it opens the hidden options in the control panel and doesn't have to run to work)
for changing the voltage on NV cards you need Nibitor and it involves saving your cards bios, changing the voltage in it and reflashing the card after.

I no longer need to do this as my college dorm has AC running 24/7 as my roommate and I agree that cold = good for both us and the computers.

Underclocking is fine, it should have no impact on the card. Overclocking, of course, is more risky as you are trying to run your card higher than factory specs... you void the warranty and risk frying your card and decreasing its lifecycle... do it as your own risk

One exception on the oc'ing and warranty = EVGA .
Evga will allow oc'ing and heatsink change without voiding the factory warranty .

That's why I bought eVGA....lol YAY 512th post, postcount matches video memory (yes I'm that geeky that I keep track of things like that...) When I had 256 posts at a different forum when I noticed I said "Hey 256th post, I hope that's how much memory my next videocard will have." Ended up with a 128MB 6800NU, but now I have two 7900GTXs so I'm not complaining.
