Definitly looks like PCI to me. I see no PCIE or even AGP. Heck, the last time I used pre-agp cards was back in the day of the voodoo 3. What does the onboard video offer as far as performance?

hmm wish i'd have put that on there, its an onboard video solution, and i'm amazed he's gone for months without going "hm i wonder what kind of card is in here, cause this isn't that nice" when he's playing.
now that i know they're PCI and all, i'm going to dig around newegg for an affordable yet well-performing card.... he's hoping to spend less than 80 if at all possible

did a quick search on newegg PCI cards, under $100, 4 pixel pipelines, and 256MB. etc...
found
PNY VCGFX522PPB GeForce FX5200 256MB 128-bit DDR PCI Video Card
for about $59.99
and
3D Fuzion 3DFR55256P GeForce FX5500 256MB 128-bit DDR PCI Video Card
for $63.99
anyone think i'm on the right track as to finding this guy a good card for WoW? just about ANYTHING he decides on should be a big step up from his onboard video right?

One of those would be better than on-board, but not by a whole lot. Sux he has only PCI slots because he'd be much happier with a PCIE or AGP-based card.
If it were me, I'd save for a system upgrade.

yeah thats his ultimate goal, a new system, but he only has the ability to buy an upgrade card as of now.
know of any other good PCI cards?

that's the main issue here... there aren't any I'm aware of that would justify the cost.
But if his frame rates with integrated graphics aren't even playable at the lowest graphics settings, then the FX5500 PCI graphics card *might* give him playable frame rates with the lowest graphics settings.

i am surprised he can even play the game - much less be addicted to it- it must look horrible. if hes already going to pay $50 for a card- i would tell him to stick it out for a couple months and by cheapo system.. tell him to check out craigslist.com sometimes you can find people sellin decent systems for under $200.

yeah he's looking to bite the bullet until he's got about 1200 bucks to buy a new computer which will be about 2 months. he's gonna get a killer deal with all the price wars and new products comin out
