2x8800 GTS or 1x8800 GTX?

Post by CMcguire »

I was planning on going for a single 8800GTX 768 mb card on my new system but looking at some benchmark figures the dual card seem to perform better.. the price for one GTX and 2 GTS(320 mb) is basically the same..

So what i am wondering is there any reasons you can think of for going for the single 8800 GTX card over the dual GTSs? Are there drawback to SLI configurations i should be aware of? Are there any situations where the GTX card will actually perform better then the dual cards?

(i would be using them for game playing)

well the GTX will have more memory then 2x 320mb GTS. not only that but if your planning on running Vista you can forget about SLi for now as I dont think it works at this point.

Well what benefit is the extra memory?

And i would be hoping that vista would have support for the dual card by the time i would actually need that much power to run a game..

what resolution will you be playing at? More memory helps at higher resolutions.

Doubt i'd ever be playing at anything over 1600X1200.. and more likely 1280x1024

I would just stick with a single 8800 GTS 320MB and then later down the line possibly getting a second one. A single 320MB will run pretty much anything I've thrown at it at 1280x1024. A GTX is overkill for that resolution.

SLI doesn't work with every game so I have a hard time suggesting that sort of configuration to anyone other than those that run extremely high resolutions.
