Anybody knows if a Pentium M 1.4 (banias) 478-pin will actually work with a CT-479 Adaptor from Asus, it only mentions that works with Pentium M with 479-ball socket.
I dont even know the difference between both, mine is a socket 478 but cpu-z identifies it has 479-ball.
well i can tell you about the socket types, but i'm not sure if i can help out with the compatibility.
the standard for cpu's for over a decade has been the PGA or Pin Grid Array type of cpus. well, when the pins got so close together and thin when high pin count cpus came out, like Intels skt775, they switched it to the ball grid array. this is, the cpu has what looks like tiny ball bearing on the bottom of the cpu and the socket has what looks like egg cartoon dimples in it. so the balls on the cpu will fit into the dimples of the socket, like how eggs fit into their egg cartons.
thats the difference. the old pin style like how it's been done for over ten years and how AMD's are still like. to the BGA using the ball grid array.
i believe that the new AM2 AMD64 cpus will switch to the BGA socket 940 when the new platform comes out.
if your adapter is for skt4798 to mobo skt478 then one side should look like the ball array that the mobile 479 mounts to. and the side that mounts down into your skt478 mobo that is where you install your 478 cpu, that should have the standard pin holes for the pins on your 478 cpu.
thats if you have the adapter for the mobile 479 BGA to 478 PGA. then with the adapter, CPUz will recognise your 479 BGA as a mobile 479 BGS cpu.
