I don't want to game. I don't want multimedia. All I want is something that can run a stripped-down version of Windows XP, connect to the school network and handle word processing. 1GB RAM is a must because I usually run several memory-hungry M$ Office apps at a time. It also needs to be fast enough that I can turn it on relatively quickly (i.e. if I don't think I need notes but I end up needing notes). This is strictly for school/actual work, I have the computer in my sig for games
I looked at basic Dells, but those are $500-$600, and the Celerons I refuse to touch.

I agree, it will be tough. I jsut got the Compag for $500 AFTER rebates, and it only has 512mb.
For the fast boot up, you can always let it in standby mode. I dont think it should use much battery power, and you can call on it quickly.
You can always increase the RAM also, like Apop suggested for mine

I just looked around and it seems like the $799.99 price point has 1gb of mem in it, but nothing lower unless you catch a real good deal with mail in rebates on it.

Remember, I am opinionated and nothing I say or do reflects on anyone or anything else but me
