Random laptop shutdowns: Why?

Post by Sovereign »

My rooommate has an Alienware laptop (Graduation gift, so don't bash Alienware). He plays Oblivion on it for hours at a time and all is well. However, when we tried to play Republic Commando and Half Life 2 Deathmatch, the computer randomly shut down. There are no event log entries. In both cases, the screen went black and the machine shut off without warning. These happened less than an hour apart. He tried to resume from Hibernate this morning (which usually works fine) but it blue screened and restarted before anyone could read the contents of the BSoD. Again, no event log entries. The Event Log service is in fact running.

Disable automatic BSOD restart then get back to us with the error codes (or google them)

1.Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

2.Click the Advanced tab.

3.Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box.

4.Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times.

5.Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.
