you can try moving the laptop to beside the router, just to see it it improves at all...
when your beside the router disable the XP firewall or any other software one you have and test.....
or can you move the router to another room, just to test also....
then if it's still bad, get the 108Mbs router first....see if it improves (even @ 54Mbps) If it doesn't get the card too...

I am going to out on a limb, but if your having pin issues and dropouts why not just use a cable? then you dont have to worry at all... Also at least test with acable, because even at 24mbs or even 10mbs your still going much faster than your internet connection, if your pings are hitting 800 it may not be your wireless. Play some games using a cable attached to your modem and see if the problems persist.
"Don't open that! It's an alien planet! Is there air? You don't know!"
i talked to my cousin and he advised against buying another router. he has the exact same i got and he plays with no problem. he explained to me that the internet conection i got is supposed to work well with the router. he told me to just change settings and stuff. ill go try that, i mean if he got the same thing and its working for him it should work for me too
Another thing you could try is plopping your system down right next to your router so that you can see 90%-100% signal strength in Windows.
Game like that for a while and if you see no problems, then think about what items in your house between your PC and your router may be interfering with the signal.
I have an 802.11b router myself and the signal strength is very poor throughout the house. I had to set it on the ground in a corner (away from all the PCs) in the upstairs office just to get a decent signal downstairs.
