Old Compaq Shuts Down Randomly

we have an old compaq laptop, with a 1ghz pentium III in it and a little bit of ram. She'll be using it and it will just shut down. We used to think it was due to heat. so we bought a cooling pad, but it would still occur. It's a compaq presario. Any ideas what might cause it hardware wise. I do not believe it to be software at all.

My HP Pavillion gets really hot and shuts down randomly as well. I did a search and a forum came up where the solution was to update the BIOS. Unfortunantly the updating software on the laptop doesn't work, and I've been too lazy to do it another way.
So maybe check for an updated BIOS?

maybe but I'll wait until my sister backs all of her stuff up on the pentium 4 desktop I gave her.

Check to make sure that all the vents are clear of dust as well.

compaqs are poor quality, for sure!
