I'm curious as to what you guys think.

Some notes.

Upgrading

2GB Memory (75-85$ shipped via the egg. Its 150$ to do it at HP)
7200RPM Sata HDD (95+$ at the egg, its 150$ or so at HP)

I may upgrade it to a DVD Burner as well. Probably not. I have the desktop to do that.

Usage

Basically I'm gonna use this for programming. That's my major (I graduate next year thank god, 5 years is a long time). Its gonna fold when not in use.

Questions

Power usage - when that is plugged in how many watts do you think its gonna use? My thinking is I should not have my Desktop using 300+ W on and folding all the time, it uses just far too much power, and I don't want the parents to pay for that. If it was half of that or less, I would fold on the laptop 24/7.

My current laptop has a Dothan @ 1.7GHz, 1GB DDR533 & 100GB HDD

The power adapter is rated for 19v @ 3.3amps so basic math shows it can only supply ~62W
I'm sure the system draws less than that, about ~40W would be about right for a new Laptop i'd guess :?

BTW, I'm getting a new laptop soon too ;)
Should be here in about two weeks also ;P

Specs:
Intel T5500 1.66GHz C2D
2GB 667MHz RAM
ATI X1400
120GB Sata Drive
15.4" Ultra Sharp Screen
9 Cell Battery
XP + Boat load of crap like McAfee, which will be promptly overwritten with Ubuntu :finga:
Oh and folding for team 38296 of course!

I just sold the "old" lappy to fellow forum member "sasser" today!

I ran it 24/7 for ~9mths with zero issues! My PPD was increased by ~100pts or so, but I didn't notice any difference.......on the laptop or my elec bill!

The new lappy should have alot more horsepower, but should still stay within the same TDP.
I actually find it weird posting this message! This is my first post in months that wasn't made on the laptop! (excluding posts from work)

well me going from normal units to SMP, and probably on average turning in one a day, will give me a nice boost. Do you recommend any add on cooler for the laptop?

I never used any cooler for my laptop, they never get that hot........It's only the desktop replacements that give out alot of heat.

:edit:
I just got a call from Dell, the new Lappy should be here next week :finga:

Sweet, i would probably upgrade Vista from basic if it was mine...
Just wondering if they offer a built in wireless N option? I haven't shopped a notebook in awhile
:drinkers:

(the HD and Mem upgrade is exactly what i did on my last laptop, although i kind of wish i had upgraded to a DVD Burner at the same time.

I went for XP as it's cheaper and the drive will be formated to run Linux only anyway!

Matt,
Have you decided on what laptop your going to get?

either the 1505 Dell or the dv6000t. I get paid tomorrow and the end of the month. We'll see how the budget looks and I should be okay to get it then. Still a couple options i might look at. I have to look at what the cost are for upgrades on memory and stuff. A lot of time its cheaper just to do it yourself.

Settled on below

Ordered my memory already, 70$ for 2GB from Fry's (30$ rebate still to come so total is more like 40$, that was a steal and I had to jump. )

Will order an 60GB Sata 7200 HDD. (If anyone sees a deal on a 60-80GB 7200 Notebook HDD let me know)

And there we go work/school machine. I get paid June 30. July 1, Mom orders the notebook for me.

Ireland has in fact banned the game as well

Ireland just took a little longer to decide to ban it. So much for using it as a loophole for PAL importing.
