screen trouble

my sisters laptop did something weird today, she left it on, came back, and the screen is really dark, but if you look closely, you can see everything, just almost black...

ideas?

sounds like the backlight has gone. Is it an old/well used laptop?

I'm guessing youve done the obvious like mess about with the brightness and contrast settings, open and close the screen and reboot.

thats what i thought and yeah its a handmedown dell inspiron from my friends dad. any idea how to fix it or would it just be worth our time to back up the info, wipe it, and sell it to a computer store?
