Toshiba Satellite A135-S4656 to XP

Post by stev »

As some users already know, I now own a Toshiba Satellite A135-S4656.

I got this machine for a steal ... So I thought. Well, the sad part is, VISTA is baking this lappy to death literally. I've got nothing but issues with VISTA on this lappy; wireless issues, printer spooler manager all messed up, F@H will no longer works, etc ... and this list keeps growing.

I've made some great steps finding plenty of the XP drivers for the devices on this lappy. My main problem is finding the time to convert it over.
XP drivers so far found are:
intel-chipset-945-mobile-express (chipset)
intel-graphics-media-driver---win2k_xp14311.exe (integrated graphics)
modem-agere_2.1.72-2kxp.exe (56k modem)
Audio-RealTek-WDM_R182.zip (sound)
NIC-Realtek-PCIE_Install_5680(installshield 12_1.13)_1116.zip (wire 10/100)
atheros-ar5006eg---AS31-51-511-802ABG_atheros_v4.2.2.7.zip (wireless)

The only downside from reading some of the Toshiba forums is that the DVD player keys to the left of the keyboard are basically Toshiba proprietary. :| Therefore, I'll have to do with out them. Nothing biggie since plenty DVD software packages are mouse driven anyways. 8)

If this lappy wasn't so proprietary, Ubuntu would be loaded first to try it out, but time still hinders that option for now.

OK, enough of this machine rambling. If anyone has Toshiba A135 drivers for XP, let me know what models it will work with. This way I'll have more options to make the switch from EVIL VISTA back to sensible XP. :P

Can you tell me where I can find the drivers that you listed? I recently loaded Win XP on the same laptop.
Thanks,

I have ten of these that I would like to move over to XP. Links to the drivers would be great. If I find them in the meantime I'll post them.

Hey, I need to check this thread more often! :)

I haven't had the time to downgrade to XP yet.

I'll post the drivers once things are loaded and working.

Below I have nearly everything to do the job now.

I'm having a very hard time finding what I need to get this machine working with xp.

Kat,

I'm on AOL and have XDrive. If you send me a PM with any basic e-mail you have, I can send you a personal linky to the XDrive folders that are public via my account there. You can even setup a free e-mail account at AOL, Yahoo or whatever if you like just for downloading the files. I'm not a spammer but another Toshiba user who prefers XP any day over VISTA.

All together, the files total 63Mb.

You can see the names of them in my earlier posting. Why the laptop didn't come with XP drivers is beyond me. It took plenty of time and forums to read about the Toshiba A135 to find all of the right drivers. One driver I could not find easily, but was helped by another Toshiba A135 owner where to get it.

I have accounts on other sites, but they don't allow me to upload any files larger than 2Mb. :? That's why I found XDrive and it's FREE to AOL users. The limit is 5Gb FREE storage. O:)

The Toshiba A135-S4656 is a Best Buy model and is somewhat very similar to a few of the other A135 models. I just haven't the time to research what other Toshiba A135-SXXXX models could benefit from the collection of drivers I have.

Re: Toshiba Satellite A135-S4656 to XP

Well, the wife slapped my hand last night for taking the laptop somewhat apart. It was for a good reason since I was testing to see if the lappy had DDR2-4200 533Mhz memory or DDR2-5300 667Mhz memory. Toshiba has conflicting specs for the memory in their own documentation from their website for the A135-S4656. Not only that, but it lists the WRONG chipset for the machine too! I visited the Corsair Memory Configurator and got more confused myself.

So, taking a somewhat of a risk, my boy's HP-Compaq V3000Z runs DDR2-5300. The Toshiba had a DDR2-5300 667Mhz 512Mb stick already in the main slot too So, I popped his memory into the Toshiba running the awful VISTA. What a surprise 256MB of additional RAM did for that machine! I then took order last night of a NewEgg promo for 1Gb DDR2-5300 Corsair memory. This will raise the memory to 1.5Gb overall. :P

The DW says we must load VISTA again on the lappy. I said W-H-A-T ??? Yep, the warranty is good until 9-8-08. So, I'm sorta stuck reloading VISTA again shortly on this lappy. :( My only way to try out XP on the lappy now is to acquire a second HDD to swap in to try XP out.

And what's up with Toshiba lappy's anyways? The A105's running XP with hardware are almost identical to the A135's running Vista with nearly the same hardware. I was up to 2am cross referencing what hardware from the A105's are a true match for my A135. Most of the stuff I already had. It's the other few things I needed too.

Ouch that sucks, Vista isn't too bad if you have enough RAM for it though...then again, I'm running 4Gb on my machine so it's doing well for me. If it'd just STFU about the damn security issues, it's worse than XP and "Are you sure?"

A friend of mine once showed me a way to turn off the "confirmation" messages. Since I don't use Vista, I forgot exactly how he did it. Just thought you would like to know it is possible.

Guys, that would be one headache to turn off those dumb messages. :P Every time I do something to the OS, the screen goes slightly dim and a message box appears asking me if I really want to do that. Like duh, that's why I picked it. However it annoys my wife and I to no end because it happens like five or more times during the time were on it per day!

So, if anyone knows where and how to turn that function off, post a link or instructions here please. :)

Method #1 - Using MSCONFIG

1.

Launch MSCONFIG from the Run menu. (Windows Key + R)
2.

Click on the Tools tab. Scroll down till you find "Disable UAC"

3.

Press the Launch button.
4.

A CMD window will open. When the command is done, you can close the window.
5.

Close MSCONFIG. You need to reboot the computer for changes to apply.

The 1Gb of Corsair Memory from NewEgg arrived for the lappy today. I'll be putting that in tonight and trying out Matt's tip!

I got the same laptop for $350 (at bb) and they threw in a wireless mouse for $10, a great deal. running vista with only 512mb of ram was not happening. :prayer: so i went out and bought two kingston 1gb sticks of ram for less than $30 each (at cc) and removed the 512mb that came in it. im very happy with it now and havent had any problems since upgrading to 2gb of ram memory. never got rid of vista either!

Best Buy must have sold plenty of these Toshiba laptops. I get PM requests often for these drivers.
