price vs performance

Post by stopthekilling77 »

My other brother who is in the Marines just got a bonus check for having shipped out to boot camp a few months before schedule, and he wants to buy a laptop!
I get the call "Hey bro, I know you're a computer guy so I'll let you do the shopping for me" and start surfing the web...

Good News:
- He's got up to $1,500 budgeted out for the machine and he isn't that picky about his components, but I am :D

Problems:
- I don't know how well AMD's mobile processors perform to the C2D counterparts FOR THE PRICE. Of course I'd like him to have the best he can get but not while he gets gouged by high prices.
- Battery life... He's going to want to do some gaming and a lot of movie watching on it, so it has to do well away from an outlet.
- CPU speed, for gaming would you say a 2.5Ghz T9300 work as well as the 2.6Ghz counterpart seeing how that extra 100Mhz usually cranks up the price another $240 or so.

I've looked at this laptop over at Ibuypower.com and it seems to fit the bill, but I'm still researching right now.
Here's what's on it the way I've configured it:
-Battalion 101 CZ-8 Ultra Notebook Case ( Battalion 101 CZ-8 Ultra 15.4" WXGA 1280x800 Widescreen TFT Notebook w/Li-ion battery, Universal AC Power Adapter Original Metallic Silver/Black )

-Video Card ( Mobility 512MB NVIDIA GeForce GO 8600GT PCI-Express 3D Video )
-Hard Drive ( 200 GB 7200rpm Serial-ATA-150 Super Slim Notebook Hard Drive )
-CD-RW/DVD-RW Drive ( 8x Dual Format DVD±R/±RW + 16x CD-R/RW Combo Drive [CZ-8 Ultra] )
-Sound Card ( 3D Premium Surround Sound Onboard )
-Fax Modem ( Build-in 56K V.92 Fax Modem [Notebook] )
-Network Card ( Build-in 10/100/1000 Network LAN [Notebook] )

Looking for some good solid opinions or options here. This thing is going to be his daily driver for a few years so it needs to do what he wants well. Thanks!

Alright, CPU, HDD, and GPU are good is good. You don't need wireless N, its just a gimmick, save some money with the G. The 4GB of memory is too much, nobody is gonna use that much. I would also get a bigger screen. You need a good 9Cell. Mine gets 4hrs+ just surfing 2.5 hours watching movies

Honestly I would look at Dells.

Something like this
