what is the difference between the 2 processor and which ones better. Also can I use either to replace my existing toshiba laptop processor

This is what is going on here...

The two sSpec numbers you gave me is when Intel moved from a 533FSB to an 800FSB processor. The original 3.06 processor was based on the C1 core and when the new 800MHz FSB revision came the Northwood processors changed over to the D1 cores. The SL726 is based off the newer 800MHz FSB northwood D1 core and should be a better overclocker due to this. If I had to pick between the C1 and D1 cores I would pick the D1 core.

As far as the notebook processor you own, it would be the Pentium M socket 479 processor. The Socket 479 mobile processor does not have the correct alignment of pins to allow a desktop 478 pin part to fit. So the Pentium 4 3.06 will not be able to work in your toshiba laptop.

thanks for your reply. I thought both of those processors were mobile. Also i have used CPU-Z and that tells me my package is mPGA-478B. Does that not mean I have a 478 socket?

you indeed have a socket 478, which is a desktop socket. Pentium M mobile processors have 479 pins which is a whole different socket.

Does that not mean that I have a mobile processor - the M after pentium 4?? I'm really confused if mines is a mobile or desktop as the sticker on my laptop also has a m above pentium 4. I thought it would have a D above pentium 4 if it was a desktop processor??

Will i be able to replace either of the above 2 processor with my existing one now i have produce the processor spec dump?

okay my bad... I made a mistake when reading your post...

The Pentium 4-M is a 478 pin PPGA FC-PGA2 processor that has a 400MHz FSB and ranges from 1.40 to 2.60 GHz.

The Pentium M is a 479 pin Micro FCPGA & FCBGA processor that has a 533MHz FSB and ranges from 1.5 to 2.13GHz.

So does that mean i can put either of the processors in then?? Is one better that the other. Ive been told the SL6S5 is hyperthreading and the SL726 is speed step technology. Is Hyperthreading better than Speed Step.

SL726 or SL6S5 ???

I researched the two but missed one important aspect witch is the Clock Multiplier.

I purchased the SL726 for my board and found that it can't go any faster than 1.6 GHz because its core multilplier is fixed at 12 as opposed to the SL6S5 wich is 23.

I've always wanted to build my own computer and now that I did, found that there's so many different (minor but significant) versions of the same processor.
