Silly Question - Palm Rests and Discoloration

My old laptop was an Inspiron E1505. Its body was made of plastic. Over the four years I owned it, the area under where my palms tended to go when typing slowly discolored. Now the obvious solution is to not type with your hands resting on the computer (and that may be better for posture too), but as evidenced by my previous computer, it happened anyway. It's easy enough to do when your laptop is actually in your lap as opposed to on a desk or table (this was the case in class sometimes).
My new laptop is another Dell--an XPS m1530 refurb from Dell's Outlet (it was a good deal too!) The palm-rest area is made of aluminum this time. So far, I've literally been typing with a piece of paper underneath my hands to keep them off the computer. Is there a more elegant solution to this problem, or should I just get used to typing with my hands elevated? Such style is apparently necessary to avoid "dropping" letters since this keyboard requires more force than my old Inspiron.
